Watershed Warriors's actions
Family
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Personal Care
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 60 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Lifestyle
Homemade Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products at home.
Community
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Community
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 60 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 3 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Pets
All Natural Pet Toys
I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Food
Advocate for Plastic-Free Dining
I will talk to the owner or manager of a restaurant I frequent to request that they reduce their use of single-use and disposable plastics.
Food
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Food
Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.
Personal Care
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by posting to my social media networks.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Plant a Garden
I will plant a herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Personal Care
See the Green
I will recycle used contact lenses and packaging.
Lifestyle
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 3 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Personal Care
Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 10 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Personal Care
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Personal Care
A Sustainable Flow
I will make the switch to sustainable, reusable period products.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Lifestyle
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Food
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.

Watershed Warriors 2022 7/31/2022 7:19 PMSuper proud of our Watershed Warrior volunteers and staff that worked together to spread the word about plastic alternatives! We are all looking forward to our next Plastic Free challenge and excited to instill our new plastic free habits into our everyday lives. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Watershed Warriors 2022 7/28/2022 11:36 AMIn my experience, sustainable fashion practices require people to make their clothing adaptable and creative in how it is worn and styled from day to day. For example, mending clothes, wearing them with a variety of clothing items, layering clothing items, or altering how the clothes fit or look. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodSingle use plastics have become normalized in our society to the point that most people don't see them as a problem. What would you say to a friend, colleague, or family member who may not understand why these disposables are an issue?
Watershed Warriors 2022 7/28/2022 11:27 AMWhen encouraging others to graduate from disposables to reusables, I emphasize the importance of minimizing our waste in general. As we know, waste takes time to decompose while some waste remains with us forever. Opting to use reusable materials and repurposing our goods rather than contributing to landfill waste is one of the most important conservation actions, in my opinion, facing more developed countries. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat are some of the cases you could make to an employer for why switching to durable dishes and utensils is actually in their best interest as well?
Watershed Warriors 2022 7/28/2022 11:24 AMOne of my first recommendations is to phase out utensils and dishes that are fragile. The restaurant industry is crazy and most everything is prone to damage. Durable dishes are more sustainable for the environment and the business itself. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat was your strategy in talking with your favorite restaurant's management? Did you find it to be effective?
Watershed Warriors 2022 7/28/2022 11:22 AMMy restaurant's management was very willing to consider plastic alternatives - this is largely due to Dylan Walker's recycling efforts at the same restaurant. Their only request was a price comparison between products and a list of expectations for staff. However, I have other managers to talk to before any plans are set in motion. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?
Watershed Warriors 2022 7/26/2022 1:31 PMPlastic production requires lots of fossil fuels. Some materials that do not look like traditional plastics (Styrofoam) are made by heating up plastic beads. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?
Watershed Warriors 2022 7/26/2022 1:28 PMPlastic production is very dependent on where you live and the resources around you. Teracycle recycles plastics that are not usually recyclable but needs a large quantity of material before it can be sent off. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsIn what ways is supplying your pet with all natural pet toys better for your pet, better for you, and better for the environment?
Watershed Warriors 2022 7/26/2022 1:20 PMWe regularly make make toys out of home items for the local animal shelters! Old socks, peanut butter jars, and towels are repurposed to make happy, temporary homes for animals awaiting their forever homes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsHow does buying used differ from buying new? How does each purchasing decision make you feel?
Watershed Warriors 2022 7/26/2022 1:16 PMBuying used significantly diminishes our consumption and reliance on fossil fuel based products! I feel much less guilty buying presents and care products for my pup when I shop from pet thrift stores rather than buying new. Repurposing items and using them to their full potential is super fulfilling!
