We have significantly reduced the amount of garbage that goes out weekly by carefully preparing meals and  not using plastics.  For a family of 10 we have the smallest amount of garbage for collection each week.  I home cook meals, have a small vegetable garden, use the water from the dehumidifier and rain barrel to water our indoor and outdoor plants, etc.  This is now second nature to the kids.
