The only challenge I have had is not buying produce with their plastic bags. I need to invest in my own reusable produce bags. I am open to suggestions on which ones I should get. I would prefer to shop local, if possible.

When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.

Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 2 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.

Use Reusables at Work
I will use reusable dishes and silverware when eating at work.
Lifestyle
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.

Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Pets
Homemade Pet Treats
I will prepare my own pet treats to avoid plastic packaging.
Family
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and tupperware-like containers in my children's lunches to reduce plastic waste.

Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Lifestyle

I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Madison Anderson 7/20/2022 3:22 PMSwitching to reusable bags has been very easy and fun for me! I have an dog one, elephant one, cat one, and more. I love being able to start a conversation about not using plastic bags when someone brings up my bags!
The only challenge I have had is not buying produce with their plastic bags. I need to invest in my own reusable produce bags. I am open to suggestions on which ones I should get. I would prefer to shop local, if possible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?
Madison Anderson 7/19/2022 10:19 AMI learned a lot from the articles provided and talking to coworkers. Plastic production is scary, especially regarding all of the health concerns it is connected to. I already knew a lot about environmental racism through college classes, but it was good to see more current/different information.
One thing I read that I had never thought before is how plastics in the ocean/waterways is supporting the travel of invasive species...
Overall, this just encourages me more to purchase the options that have less plastic, support local refill shops, and to continue to encourage family and friends to do the same. -
Madison Anderson 7/18/2022 2:14 PMFor today's homemade pet treats, I am just freezing some dog-friendly bone broth! A nice, easy, and rehydrating treat for these hot summer days. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareHow can you advocate for the importance of reducing packaging to the rest of your friends, family and larger community?
Madison Anderson 7/18/2022 2:11 PMIf it means supporting a small/local business it will not be hard to convince most of my family and friends to switch to an option that has less packaging.
If it is from a big company like Amazon or Target, I am not sure if I could convince them to choose the option with the least amount of packaging. I will still try! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyMost of us know that the "3 R's" are reduce, reuse, recycle. Recycling is most heavily emphasized in modern Western culture. How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?
Madison Anderson 7/18/2022 1:56 PMI wish more people knew that recycling is the last step and that you should really try to reduce and reuse before you recycle. It is a common thing I bring up when people talk about recycling.
To incorporate the other R's I could look at Pinterest more! There are a TON of great ideas for DIYs that I can use recycled items on. I just have to remember to take it one step at a time to avoid getting discouraged. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Madison Anderson 7/12/2022 3:28 PMI am saving money when I do not buy travel sized products. I try to use local products, or products that I get at a bulk/refill store so it is truly the best option for me. By the second use I am already saving money. I will definitely be doing this again. I will encourage other to do the same! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Madison Anderson 7/11/2022 10:48 AMMeal planning and cooking less per meal are two things that I can start doing to help me reduce my food waste!
Most of the food waste that I create is because I made too much and cannot eat all of the leftovers. The other problem is I plan one meal that uses half of something but I do not plan another meal to finish the rest of it. For example, I made pasta with half a bag of spinach but I ended up having to throw out the rest because I did not plan a meal to use the rest of it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsHow could you reduce your waste even further (i.e. by making pet treats out of kitchen scraps or about-to-go-bad produce)?
Madison Anderson 7/07/2022 12:34 PMMeal planning! It is one thing I struggle with, but when I do it I am less likely to waste food. -
Madison Anderson 7/05/2022 8:38 AMFor my homemade dog treats I made pumpkin, coconut oil, and water ice cube treats. My doggies loved them! I cannot wait to make some more.
