  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Personal Care
How can you advocate for the importance of reducing packaging to the rest of your friends, family and larger community?

    Peg Armstrong-Gustafson 7/11/2022 12:09 PM
This is something I have been doing regularly. I have now convinced my daughter ad my sister and my brother and sister-in-law. Once they are aware and if the supplier offers the larger volume it is easy to adopt this practice. Plus we always take our own cosmetics so as not to use the hotel supplies which det thrown in the garbage.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
What are some of the cases you could make to an employer for why switching to durable dishes and utensils is actually in their best interest as well?

    Peg Armstrong-Gustafson's avatar
    Peg Armstrong-Gustafson 7/11/2022 12:07 PM
The big one is the cost of disposing of waste and the buying of disposable items. I have three different organizations that i have worked with on this and they are taking steps.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family
What did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?

    Peg Armstrong-Gustafson's avatar
    Peg Armstrong-Gustafson 7/11/2022 12:05 PM
WE read about environmental justice/injustice daily through our news feeds, our newsletters and some social media. What we continue to find is that environmental injustice follows other injustices like poverty, lack of education, lack of access to resources, poor water quality, etc. It is just one more injustice that impacts those already burdened.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
In what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?

    Peg Armstrong-Gustafson's avatar
    Peg Armstrong-Gustafson 7/11/2022 12:01 PM
It reaches interested parties. I prefer leading by example and by convincing folks to reduce waste by talking with them but social media reaches a bigger audience faster.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Take time to reflect or meditate over your plastic-free cup of tea. Share your thoughts and reflections with us here!

I feel better about a plastic free cup of tea but I also think we should have a goal about not using K-cups for coffee. It is easy to use reusable brewing cups - just like loose leaf tea.

It is going okay except for the plastic free meal. That is the hardest since so many suppliers use plastic. I always try to find plastic that can be recycled.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

    Peg Armstrong-Gustafson's avatar
    Peg Armstrong-Gustafson 7/11/2022 8:51 AM
First off, I went grocery shopping. I go to whole foods that only offers paper bags. They make it easy if I forget my own shopping bags. Mostly I take my own bags, especially for veggies and fruits.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Since the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?

    Peg Armstrong-Gustafson's avatar
    Peg Armstrong-Gustafson 7/11/2022 8:49 AM
Many of the places I frequent offer reusable mugs but you have to ask for it. I mainly only go to these businesses.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
It is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?

    Peg Armstrong-Gustafson's avatar
    Peg Armstrong-Gustafson 7/08/2022 2:49 PM
We have done this at our church by putting in a high efficiency dishwasher and using real dishes, glasses and flatware. Covid stopped this but we are now back to this practice.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

    Peg Armstrong-Gustafson's avatar
    Peg Armstrong-Gustafson 7/08/2022 2:47 PM
The amount of single use packaging is overwhelming!!! It reminds me that I need to go to more farmers markets for fresh product!
