Lifestyle
KEEP IT UPCYCLE
Post to our Team APE feed about an item that you "upcycled" or "creatively reused" and thereby avoided consuming plastic associated with buying a new item and having that item sent to you/your area!
Lifestyle
Proper Bioplastic Disposal
I will spend at least 15 minutes researching how to properly dispose of bioplastics in my city and share this information with 2 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 25 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Family
Natural Paints
I will paint rooms in my home with low/no VOC or natural paints.
Personal Care
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Lifestyle
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 20 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Personal Care
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Food
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Personal Care
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat's a positive example of a repurposed good that you have observed in your neighborhood/city?
Nancy Balet 7/28/2022 4:01 PMWhen non-profit agencies mail fundraising promo items, I take the items (notepads, stickers, bookmarks) too a Little Free Library in my neighborhood. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Nancy Balet 7/06/2022 8:32 AMGrocery and take out bags are easy for me to replace with reusables (been doing it for years) but I'm having a hard time giving up the produce bags. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Nancy Balet 7/06/2022 8:29 AMIt is really difficult to recycle plastic bags and film packaging. I'll keep my bag full of plastic film in my car so I can drop it off at a specific local Target when I am there.
