Teri's actions
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 10 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Personal Care
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 2 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by posting to my social media networks.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Lifestyle
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Pets
All Natural Pet Toys
I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 10 piece(s) of litter each day.
Family
Discover Together
I will spend 30 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Family
Glass Bottle Baby
I will replace 10 plastic bottles with glass or stainless steel alternatives.
Community
Watch a Plastic themed documentary.
Watch film "Smog of the Sea" to learn more about the impact of plastic in our oceans. Be inspired by the unique crew and see that anyone can make a difference.
Community
Host a Watch Party
I will host a watch party with friends and/or colleagues to watch and discuss a movie about plastics.

Teri Heath 7/07/2022 12:05 PMInstead of buying plastic throw away toothbrushes I just bought some bamboo toothbrushes that are BPA free and compostable handles. -
Teri Heath 7/04/2022 3:53 AMThis challenge has me so much more aware of how much single use plastic I was using. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?
Teri Heath 7/04/2022 3:50 AMI refused a Styrofoam container for my take out and opted for a cardboard box. -
Teri Heath 7/01/2022 10:38 AMI lot of the challenges are things I already do. This only emphasizes the importance of doing little things to help solve the plastic pollution problem. Also, it's fun to do this as a team against other teams. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Teri Heath 7/01/2022 3:34 AMI love getting out in nature and doing my part to help clean up the environment. I've done this many times in the past and will volunteer for more clean ups in the future. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareEven though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Teri Heath 7/01/2022 3:30 AMI carry my own reusable straws everywhere I go. Not so much in this county. But in Lee County they had stopped using plastic straws on the beach and using paper straws. I do see more abd more people becoming aware of the problem of plastic straws. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Teri Heath 7/01/2022 3:28 AMMost eating places I visit, use real utensils for eating. When I do take a lunch that requires utensils I bring my own and then bring them home to wash and use again. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Teri Heath 7/01/2022 3:22 AMMy biggest problem with this challenge is remembering to grab my reusable shopping bags on my way to the store. I've gotten a lot better at this lately.-
Danielle Dwyer 7/06/2022 7:19 AMI struggle with this too sometimes! I try to always keep an extra bag in my car. Glad to see you are making an effort to be plastic free :)

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Teri Heath 7/01/2022 3:20 AMI bought several reusable containers to carry my daily snacks. If U do use a plastic baggie to hold something, I usually wash it out and use the same bag several times.
