Mary's actions
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 1 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by posting to my social media networks.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Lifestyle
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 1 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 15 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?
-
Mary Bronson 7/31/2022 9:31 PMI've enjoyed the EcoChallenge and have made many changes in my everyday actions to help in making our earth more plastic free. -
Mary Bronson 7/28/2022 1:51 PMI bought lettuce today in bulk without any plastic. Normally I would have bought a huge plastic container full of lettuce. It is more work as I can to clean and spin it, but if it helps keep plastic out of the landfill, it's worth the effort! -
Mary Bronson 7/26/2022 9:28 PMToday I made my own yogurt for the first time instead of buying it in the huge plastic containers. No waste with making my own as I put it in glass bottles. -
Mary Bronson 7/25/2022 8:01 AMInstead of using saran wrap, I now use small reusable containers for my lemons, avocados, etc. Every little effort on my part saves the earth! -
Mary Bronson 7/23/2022 8:04 PMI've washed windows and mirrors in my house this week with my Norwex Envirocloth and water, no chemicals, and saved lots of paper towels that would have gone into the landfill. -
Mary Bronson 7/23/2022 7:57 PMI dudnt get out to collect litter today but will try to collect more tomorrow. -
Mary Bronson 7/22/2022 9:12 PMI definitely think this challenge has helped me to see how much plastic I use each day even when I think I'm being careful. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Mary Bronson 7/21/2022 9:32 PMI've noticed almost all of the produce items are in plastic. Today I bought the bulk tomatoes instead of the cherry tomatoes that were only in plastic. I also bought loose leaf lettuce instead of the king I usually bought in a huge plastic container. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Mary Bronson 7/16/2022 8:58 PMIt helps me to feel like I am helping to make our community cleaner and environmentally more pleasant. -
Mary Bronson 7/15/2022 8:41 AMI have talked to more people, whether they want to hear it or not, about the EcoChallenge, and how we can help, by the little things we do each day, to make the earth a cleaner and better place.
