  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Personal Care Pearly Whites
Currently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

    Shelby Brookbank's avatar
    Shelby Brookbank 7/30/2022 11:29 AM
Supporting local companies that sell eco friendly products like toothpaste allows for those products to be more readily available
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Say No to Styrofoam
How might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?

    Shelby Brookbank's avatar
    Shelby Brookbank 7/30/2022 11:26 AM
The process of plastic production creates many toxins that are harmful to humans and their environment. These plastic production facilities are often in areas with poorer citizens, which often times are impacting people of color due to systemic racism.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Estimate My Plastic Consumption
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

    Shelby Brookbank's avatar
    Shelby Brookbank 7/28/2022 7:05 AM
I was mostly surprised at how much better I am at my use of plastics compared to how I was before college. I did a consumption calculator during my studies, in which I received a minor in environmental science, and found the things I needed to work on most. I still have improvements to do but I am progressing.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Research Local Waste Sites
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

    Shelby Brookbank's avatar
    Shelby Brookbank 7/28/2022 7:03 AM
Of the 40 remaining class 1 landfills in Florida, only one remains in Hillsborough County. It is located east of Apollo Beach in an area with relatively little human population.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Pick Up the Phone
What do all of us have in common, regardless of politics, race, religion, occupation, or place we live? How can finding common ground help us as a society and as a species?

    Shelby Brookbank's avatar
    Shelby Brookbank 7/26/2022 5:53 AM
Every person needs access to clean water and food. Knowing that everyone deserves clean water means understanding that it is necessary to have plastics in use to ensure that is an option.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Share My Actions
Have you noticed a difference in how your community, friends, and family members use plastics since you've shared your own actions?

    Shelby Brookbank's avatar
    Shelby Brookbank 7/26/2022 5:51 AM
A post is not much but it seems to have made a small stir. My mother has been messaging me asking about what can be recycled!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Personal Care Eco Deodorant
Do some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?

    Shelby Brookbank's avatar
    Shelby Brookbank 7/23/2022 7:25 AM
According to Penn Medicine, the harmful impacts from aluminum deodorant do not have enough evidence to be linked to aluminum. Instead of spreading misinformation, I will not speak to any aluminum side effects. I do have quite sensitive skin that is prone to irritation so I use a gentler formula of deodorant and will be researching gentle natural deodorants for my next purchases.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Host a Watch Party
How does hosting a watch party help you to get to know your guests, connect them to the cause you are focusing on, and build your community?

    Shelby Brookbank's avatar
    Shelby Brookbank 7/23/2022 7:17 AM
I knew that my guests are my friends, but many of the people come from different backgrounds as well as different regions of the country. Each person had some background on ecological problems due to having conversations with me about them, but it was a great way to show every guest a little more in depth look into the issues at hand.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Community Raise Money For a Nonprofit
What are organizations in your region doing to address plastic pollution or other related issues? How can you support them?

    Shelby Brookbank's avatar
    Shelby Brookbank 7/22/2022 2:34 PM
There are many organizations that help to address plastic pollution, including right here at the Florida Aquarium! The way to support us here is to partake in community cleanups! All employees did a conservation day, but doing more and supporting the volunteers that go out cleaning is a great support!
