Sheila's actions

Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Personal Care
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Personal Care
Practice Sustainable Fashion

When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.

Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Food
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Food
Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Family
Natural Paints
I will paint rooms in my home with low/no VOC or natural paints.
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 1 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Food
Advocate for Plastic-Free Dining
I will talk to the owner or manager of a restaurant I frequent to request that they reduce their use of single-use and disposable plastics.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 1 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Community
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 5 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Community
Raise Money For a Nonprofit
I will raise money to support a nonprofit dedicated to plastic pollution reduction.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Community
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Family
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 2 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Food
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Food
Use Reusables at Work
I will use reusable dishes and silverware when eating at work.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Sheila Coates 7/29/2022 4:58 PMLook back to how things used to be--sandwiches wrapped in a towel, dipping sauces in recyclable containers, think of a thermos where you drink or eat out of the cup/lid. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Sheila Coates 7/29/2022 4:54 PMMy clients love using real plates and silverware. I'm really surprised that they even noticed the difference. One asked if we could use a tablecloth sometime, since we were "getting so swanky." -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodTake time to reflect or meditate over your plastic-free cup of tea. Share your thoughts and reflections with us here!
Sheila Coates 7/29/2022 4:48 PMI have always used a tea ball w/a loose weave fabric as it's holes are too big. I make a concentrate, then store it in a glass jar. When ready to consume, I add extra water and ice. Sometimes, I add fruit. Yummy!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodIt is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?
Sheila Coates 7/24/2022 12:04 PMI have a couple people that I prepare meals for. I have been making extra time to spend with them, which includes dish washing. Why not use regular silverware if you're washing anyway??? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Sheila Coates 7/24/2022 11:57 AMI took in a little basket and put my produce in it, Although the clerk tried to charge me for it (no upc evident--from the $1.25 store,) she easily rang up the veggies without trouble. The container fit in my reusable grocery bag. -
Sheila Coates 7/09/2022 8:11 PMIt's hard to be consistent, but I'm improving being plastic free every day!
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Sheila Coates 7/05/2022 6:12 AMMcDonalds people now ask me if I'd like a straw--not just giving one out. I don't know if that's true for everyone or just me....? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareWhat are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?
Sheila Coates 7/03/2022 10:11 PMI buy my shampoo by the gallon. I have 2 containers that I refill from the gallon jug. I also have some smaller containers (recycled) from past visits to hotels that I have filled as donations for the homeless. I use masking tape to label them correctly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Sheila Coates 7/03/2022 10:05 PMI have been looking for better quality in the clothing I buy. Quality is less trendy, but lends itself to repair instead of replacement. To make the items "mine," I have been experimenting with adding darts or elastic and subtracting or changing out items like buttons and zippers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Sheila Coates 7/03/2022 9:57 PMI have a lot of bumble bees in my yard. I try to have both plants and veggies in my garden, which helps to support polinators.
