Lydia's actions
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Personal Care
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Pets
Homemade Pet Treats
I will prepare my own pet treats to avoid plastic packaging.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 15 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Personal Care
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Family
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 5 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Family
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 20 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Family
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Family
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!

REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareWhat are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?
Lydia Crowl 7/29/2022 2:49 PMI think my personal benefits of switching is getting better products that are locally made. I have started buying locally made products that either have no packaging or they used glass packaging. Glass is easier to recycle and upcycle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Lydia Crowl 7/18/2022 2:32 AMThe closest landfill is designed just for construction and demol debris and is not near a neighborhood that I could tell. I couldn't find anything about the environmental impact they have. FCSL however is the next closest one and their claim is to be "a municipal solid waste landfill designed to protect the environment regulated by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. Every year, approximately a million tons of waste is disposed of at FCSL." Their website has an easy to read breakdown of recyclables. They service Franklin County and surrounding communities and are always working on the community impact to make what they do more beneficial for the communities and the environment. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyWhat did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?
Lydia Crowl 7/06/2022 8:11 PMWe learned that there is much more we can do to help the environment and it's not as difficult as one might think. We are now wondering how much of our recycling is reused and if there are places we can take specific recyclables. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Lydia Crowl 7/06/2022 8:09 PMBringing bread and a jar of peanut butter as well as fruit from my garden was much more convenient than having to stop and get fast food that isn't as nutritious. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?
Lydia Crowl 7/06/2022 8:06 PMSwapping out packaged fruits from stores for the Blackberries grown in my garden benefits my family financially by saving money as well as keeping single use packaging out of our refuse.
