Nirel's actions
Food
Advocate for Plastic-Free Dining
I will talk to the owner or manager of a restaurant I frequent to request that they reduce their use of single-use and disposable plastics.
Family
Glass Bottle Baby
I will replace 5 plastic bottles with glass or stainless steel alternatives.
Lifestyle
KEEP IT UPCYCLE
Post to our Team APE feed about an item that you "upcycled" or "creatively reused" and thereby avoided consuming plastic associated with buying a new item and having that item sent to you/your area!
Personal Care
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Food
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Lifestyle
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Food
Plant a Garden
I will plant a herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Personal Care
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Personal Care
Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Personal Care
See the Green
I will recycle used contact lenses and packaging.
Personal Care
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Personal Care
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Personal Care
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 30 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Family
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Food
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Lifestyle
Homemade Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products at home.
Food
Use Reusables at Work
I will use reusable dishes and silverware when eating at work.

Nirel Davies 7/30/2022 8:46 PMI came across a yard with hummingbird feeders made from soy sauce bottles and wire hangers. The bottles with red caps were fulled with liquid and turned upside down. The wire from the hangers were twisted around the bottles and hung on trees. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat was your strategy in talking with your favorite restaurant's management? Did you find it to be effective?
Nirel Davies 7/29/2022 7:44 PMIt was a big thank you to our favorite pho restaurant for using compostable carry out containers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareCurrently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?
Nirel Davies 7/27/2022 5:59 PMTelling my BFFs at the dentist’s office about eco friendly toothpaste/packaging 😁 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhy do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?
Nirel Davies 7/27/2022 5:56 PMI chew xylitol gum to neutralize bacteria and help strengthen my teeth. I also chew gum because I’m not supposed to (braces). I’m a little bit of a rebel that way. 😎 Shhhh don’t tell my orthodontist 🤫 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat's a positive example of a repurposed good that you have observed in your neighborhood/city?
Nirel Davies 7/27/2022 5:46 PMI’ve seen plastic bottles and dish soap containers being used as planter boxes and pots! People even add yarn or string to make hanging plants 😎 -
Nirel Davies 7/27/2022 5:43 PMFinally used up our last bottles of liquid bath wash and switched to bar soap that comes in cardboard boxes! The good news - there are less harmful ingredients and preservatives in bar soaps. -
