Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
Have you noticed a difference in how your community, friends, and family members use plastics since you've shared your own actions?

Since the Eco Challenge has started, I have received feedback from many teammates on how this challenge has not only led to lifestyle changes for themselves but for some of their friends and family members too. Ever since I introduced a family member to reusable K-Cups for their Keurig, that is all they use rather than buying bulk of the plastic K-Cups! They even claim that not only is this a more eco friendly swap, but a budget friendly swap too!

I have tried to get my family ok board with reducing plastic use. They have started to look for more ways to be environmentally conscious

Hi Florida Aquarium team! We are already in the last week of Plastic Free July. I want to challenge everyone to share what they have learned through participating in this challenge with friends and family members who did not partake in the eco challenge. Education is such a powerful tool, especially in the realm of sustainability and conservation. You all have made incredible impact already this Plastic Free July.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?

Something I learned through my research is that being plastic free or making eco friendly swaps is not easy for everyone. Accessibility and affordability is a big issue in sustainability.

A food action I recently added to my dashboard was to use reusable Keurig cups at home! If you did not know about these yet, you can purchase them at Target! You can fill it with your choice of ground coffee, and are a great alternative to other plastic K-cups.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Personal Care
What are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?

    Danielle Dwyer's avatar
    Danielle Dwyer 7/22/2022 6:38 AM
Bamboo toothbrushes can be a great alternative to the typical plastic ones we use. We have lots of bamboo toothbrushes to give out to teammates who complete the "estimate my plastic footprint" action item!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

    Danielle Dwyer's avatar
    Danielle Dwyer 7/19/2022 10:16 AM
Working in a city but living in a small town can make remembering what I can recycle difficult. The Aquarium does a great job of having reminders right above the recycle bin on what we can recycle. I also learned more about the Florida Aquariums recycling program at a staff lunch and learn.

Some actions for Plastic Free July invite us to learn about the impact of the production and use of plastics rather than making swaps or buying new products. I took some time this past weekend to learn about sustainable fashion through the links provided in the "lifestyle" section. This motivated me to be more conscious about my purchases in the future.
What will you learn about this week?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Danielle Dwyer's avatar
    Danielle Dwyer 7/18/2022 7:11 AM
Other activities can be great ways to engage in an activity where I feel like I am expressing my personality. One example is baking! There are endless opportunities, and it can lead to reducing waste in food consumption. Plus, I can share with my family and coworkers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Thanks to the Staff Conservation Day of Action initiative at the Florida Aquarium, I was able to not only host but participate in a clean up recently!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle
Often, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?

Many single use packaging and wrapping for food at stores are harmful to humans.
