    Food
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

Plastic is every where at the big grocery stores, individually wrapped plastic "serving sizes" of fish inside of another plastic bag.. Shop local that seems to be the way to avoid it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

It was recently brought to my attention that bottle caps are not recyclable. I wish we had a better way to deal with that.

In many places you CAN include plastic bottle caps, as long as they're screwed on to the bottle or carton-- the issue is usually that they get stuck in the gears of sorting machinery if they're loose... Some towns or haulers are okay with caps on bottles, but some are not, so always really important to check your local guidance 👍

How might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?

It is interesting how we inflict Styrofoam on fast food places in low income neighborhoods. So often people who work in the field still need to eat and are not given any choices. Pressed cardboard boxes should become the norm.

Just discovered that using a cardboard box as a container when headed to the hardware store is the way to go! keeps your car clean, and eventually you can recycle it!

Sometimes I forget to bring my bags into the store, either I have left them home in my kitchen or in the back of my car. this morning on TV I saw that they recommend using a laundry basket...  you just put your groceries in it, If you use an app to shop it can go right in your cart, then in your car... I might have to try this...

What a cool idea! Would also be fun to see how people react to the lady with the laundry basket in her shopping cart 🤪 Anyone know where to find a non-plastic laundry basket??

What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

    Joanne Fazzari's avatar
    Joanne Fazzari 7/20/2022 7:18 AM
If you heat up a knife you can make small slices of soap for travel.  if you slide it into an old pantyhose like sock you can take it camping and it is like a soap on a rope!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family
How does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?

Fruits, nuts, veggies I 'm 100% no plastic. But can someone recommend a better way to deal with  string cheese !...

    • Lielle Berman's avatar
      Lielle Berman 7/20/2022 7:27 AM
Cheese is so hard...the only way to get it without plastic is if your store has an attended cheese counter and can wrap in paper or let you use your own container 😕 Anyone every try making your own?? Cheese curd supposedly isn't too hard to make, and tastes just like string cheese...
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Most of us know that the "3 R's" are reduce, reuse, recycle. Recycling is most heavily emphasized in modern Western culture. How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

Here's a tip I saved those really small glass jar's that some spices come in. If I don't refill them I use them to for things like salad dressing or small snacks. It  has significantly reduced my need for zip Lock baggies!

How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Joanne Fazzari 7/12/2022 10:52 AM
Well Covid taught me I don't need much. I love fashion, can't afford high end so I have been shopping resale shops for years. I also enjoy crafting and have made a series of tote bags from old clothes , sheets and scraps of fabric. so much fun and still eco friendly!

When it comes to packing lunch I have mastered the no plastic challenge, but shopping was a bit harder. summer and the availability of fresh produce helps, but some basics are impossible to find in bulk! still this has been eye opening.
