cris's actions
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 3 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Personal Care
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.
Food
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 60 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Food
Use Reusables at Work
I will use reusable dishes and silverware when eating at work.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Personal Care
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Food
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Personal Care
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.

cris fernandez 7/31/2022 10:48 PMAs i reflect on this month and the changes that i hope to keep, some will be easy; switching from disposable shavers to steel ones. May add a little more time while i shave but it will be one way that i can do my part in keeping it plastic out of dumps/waste stations and hopefully out of ocean. Not having disposable water bottles in my truck, rather making sure that i have my water bottle with me is not only good for planet but also good for my pocketbook. Educating myself on all the plastic i can take out of my life and sharing with my family and friends is something that I will continue to do. What i have learned and will continue to learn about is how we all can do our small part and those small parts add up.

cris fernandez 7/18/2022 8:17 PMFirst shave with steel blade, happy to report that no cuts! It does take longer but now i can make this a ritual not a chore . -
cris fernandez 7/01/2022 2:27 PMBrought in my own mug for my tea. Will leave in office. Trying small steps in order to be aware of where I am using plastic unnecessarily. -
cris fernandez 7/01/2022 2:07 PMbrought in to work my own spoon and fork for breakfast and lunch meals.
