Lifestyle
KEEP IT UPCYCLE
Post to our Team APE feed about an item that you "upcycled" or "creatively reused" and thereby avoided consuming plastic associated with buying a new item and having that item sent to you/your area!
Lifestyle
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Lifestyle
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Family
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and tupperware-like containers in my children's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Personal Care
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Personal Care
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Family
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 15 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Personal Care
A Sustainable Flow
I will make the switch to sustainable, reusable period products.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by posting to my social media networks.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Food
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Food
Reusing food packaging.
Instead of disposing of packaging from food items, I can save and clean them to reuse. I.e. plastic containers, bread bags, jars, etc.
Food
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyHow can you and your little one exercise your creativity without creating more plastic waste?
Belen Flores 7/31/2022 2:09 PMI do not have a little one, but I love crafting! I enjoy seeing DIYs online and seeing how I can supplement the materials for what l already have.
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHave you noticed a difference in how your community, friends, and family members use plastics since you've shared your own actions?
Belen Flores 7/31/2022 2:05 PMCloser to the beginning of July I made a post to my instagram story. I got close to 80 views, and had 4 people sign up. I am not sure if they stayed active, but one was my mom who was active than me!

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Belen Flores 7/31/2022 2:01 PMFrom my research I was able to find a resource from LADWP showing local sites around LA.https://dpw.lacounty.gov/epd/hhw/ when looking at local landfills they were closer to me than I realized. Unfortunately as I guessed the landfills were in minority/ low income communities. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Belen Flores 7/31/2022 1:52 PMThe are that it is fun! I have found it most easy to establish this economy with family. Getting homegrown or home cooked food from family is always a positive dynamic change as it feels loving and personal. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Belen Flores 7/31/2022 1:50 PMThe type of single use plastics used for packaging when l grocery shop, is coming from pantry items. Like snacks, rice, beans, etc. Sometimes we have the opportunity to these things like beans from bulk barrels and use our own packaging, but that isn't always an option

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodTake time to reflect or meditate over your plastic-free cup of tea. Share your thoughts and reflections with us here!
Belen Flores 7/31/2022 1:43 PMMy favorite right now is to make iced chrysanthemum tea to have while doing a nice relaxing hobby. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyMost of us know that the "3 R's" are reduce, reuse, recycle. Recycling is most heavily emphasized in modern Western culture. How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?
Belen Flores 7/31/2022 1:41 PMI already feel as though a couple of these are already implemented into my lifestyle such as reuse, repair, and repurpose. I love to express my creativity through giving new life to things I already own. However, even in these aspects I have great room for improvement.l will to seek ways to implement these R’s into my lifestyle to bring greater satisfaction in my consumption.
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Belen Flores 7/31/2022 1:33 PMIt helps me be more prideful of my community. Seeing it is something I can take in, especially if I contributed. Also when at the Zoo I noticed that coworkers began to pick up the occasional trash with me and contribute to what I took to the garbage cans.
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?
Belen Flores 7/31/2022 1:01 PMStyrofoam is more often found in minority communities. Even in our groceries, like cup of noodles and other packaged foods.it can be harder for our communities to avoid it if that is only option. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Belen Flores 7/16/2022 8:57 PMI have seen quite a big difference in my community. I now believe LA county only provides plastic straws upon request if at all. I personally hardly ever use plastic straws when out, and carry a compact metal straw in my bag. I also more frequently see paper or compostable straws.
