Keep My Community Clean

I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.

DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Become a Recycling Pro

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 15 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Switch to Loose Leaf Tea

Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.

COMPLETED 14
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Use a Reusable Mug

If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.

COMPLETED 19

Plant a Garden

I will plant a herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.

Gardening is calming, as I move about improving my habitat and observing nature’s surprises. Lots of birdsong and beautiful colors are soothing.

I hadn’t realized that tea bags are plastic so this change is meaningful.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle
What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

Refilling my travel containers with shampoo and body wash has been simple. The little jugs fit well in my bath caddy. I’m saving money and not putting more unnecessary plastic into the environment. Definitely will keep doing it—why ever not?!!

Since the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?

This is easy to do. When I leave home I carry my reusable mug and use it all day.

We were traveling across several states this past weekend and we tried to get coffee at one rest stop and they refused… so we went caffeine-deprived but they refilled it no problem at the next. It seems like some places just don’t quite understand still that that isn’t a risk for COVID-19! But overall it seems to be less and less places that refuse.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

Info on recycling is hugely confusing. Plastic manufacturers pretend that the numbers they put in triangles are important, but recycling info from facilities say otherwise—to ignore the numbers. Pay attention only to type, like wide-mouthed cups and bottles. It’s a mess.

Picking up litter reminds me that I can improve local conditions by my own personal actions. It helps me feel a part of our shared home.
