Amanda's actions
Food
Plant a Garden
I will plant a herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 2 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Personal Care
A Sustainable Flow
I will make the switch to sustainable, reusable period products.
Personal Care
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Lifestyle
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Personal Care
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.
Community
Host a Watch Party
I will host a watch party with friends and/or colleagues to watch and discuss a movie about plastics.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by posting to my social media networks.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Food
Use Reusables at Work
I will use reusable dishes and silverware when eating at work.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
Participant Feed

Amanda Fyfe 7/06/2022 3:55 PMFeeling pretty accomplished on day 6 of PFJ! It’s a little overwhelming to really pay close attention to just how much single use plastic is part of daily life. I’m excited to be learning more and doing my part -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Amanda Fyfe 7/04/2022 4:35 AMI’ve learned that the pick up recycling program where I live is quite limited when it comes to plastics (#1 & 2 only). I also discovered however a guide to all the places to drop off and recycle lots of different items! https://nola.gov/sanitation/documents/new-orleans-recycling-guide/ -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodIt is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?
Amanda Fyfe 7/03/2022 7:00 AMInspiring others to action by modeling that action is really powerful! When something is seen in action on a daily basis it will feel like less of a burden to change your own habits. By trying to use reusable dishes at work as much as possible I hope that we can all inspire and encourage each other to keep at it! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Amanda Fyfe 7/03/2022 6:57 AMThis is a relatively easy challenge for me. I’ve gotten into the habit of keeping lots of reusable bags in my car (enough for 2 grocery trips) so that if I forget to put them back in my car I’m still able to avoid using plastic bags -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodSince the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?
Amanda Fyfe 7/02/2022 12:02 PMThis limitation during COVID actually helped to push me to bring drinks from home more because there was such limitation on being able to use your own cups. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Amanda Fyfe 7/02/2022 11:59 AMCleaning up a community allows you to develop and connection and pride to be part of something. You may meet people and make connections and inspire action in others -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Amanda Fyfe 7/02/2022 9:35 AMYes definitely! I’ve seen many places in the community that at least wait to be asked for a straw instead of offering
