Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 15 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Community
Host a Watch Party
I will host a watch party with friends and/or colleagues to watch and discuss a movie about plastics.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Kaitlyn Gengler 7/28/2022 7:06 AMOn a global level I am concerned about the amount of environmental education people have access to when it comes to plastics and recycling. In the U.S. most of us can go on the internet to learn more about proper recycling. When it comes to third world countries they do not always have that luxury. We need to find ways to spread environmental education to help the planet as a whole. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?
Kaitlyn Gengler 7/28/2022 7:03 AMI was shocked after seeing my results from the plastic consumption calculator. We commonly think of plastic use when it comes to water bottles and shopping bags, but we use it in so much more. I want to put a larger focus on reducing my plastic consumption when it comes to health/beauty products and clothing. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Kaitlyn Gengler 7/28/2022 7:00 AMOften times waste sites and landfills are located in lower income communities, research has shown that this not only impacts how the community looks, but it also can be harmful to the health of those that live nearby. Exposure to chemicals from inhaling toxic fumes and dust can lead to long term health problems. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?
Kaitlyn Gengler 7/27/2022 12:30 PMThe production of plastics is just as harmful to the environment as the waste it produce. Making plastic often time uses fossil fuels at an unsustainable rate. As we advance in science we have also seen chemicals from plastics in the human body, we do not hear enough about this in the news. If more people knew about this maybe people would rethink plastics use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Kaitlyn Gengler 7/27/2022 12:13 PMWhen focusing on reusable food storage a way to think outside the box is going beyond using them just at home. If you have collapsible Tupperware you can bring them to work or even out to eat for when you have left overs to reduce plastic and Styrofoam use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHave you noticed a difference in how your community, friends, and family members use plastics since you've shared your own actions?
Kaitlyn Gengler 7/27/2022 12:11 PMSocial media is a great tool to use in order to promote a plastic-free lifestyle. I can post about choices I am making to make a difference, while it may not influence everyone to do the same it at least brings light to what I am doing and hopefully a few others will try the same. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?
Kaitlyn Gengler 7/26/2022 12:53 PMToday I learned that nearly 45% of bioplastics are not even biodegradable, so this can be misleading to consumers. Certain biodegradable plastics need to be kept in certain environmental conditions in order for them to even begin to break down. A great way to avoid all this entering the environment is to not even use the plastic products in the first place. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Kaitlyn Gengler 7/24/2022 6:46 AMA huge benefit to refiling travel containers is reducing the demand for the tiny plastic shampoo bottles hotels give out. If more people pack their own, the demand for single use bottles goes down. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Kaitlyn Gengler 7/24/2022 6:43 AMUnfortunately my apartment complex is not the best at recycling. We have trash pick up and are given one trash can, but there is no option for recycling. If I want to recycle cardboard I need to haul it all down to a separate trash room, while I do not mind, most people find it an inconvenience and don't bother. I want to talk to the building managers to post signs of what is accepted and how to properly recycle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Kaitlyn Gengler 7/24/2022 6:39 AMOn a recent road trip I packaged snacks from home in my reusable silicon containers and it was super easy! I also saved money instead of buying snacks on the road, so it was a win win.
