Kim's actions
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Personal Care
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 60 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 15 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Food
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Personal Care
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Pets
Homemade Pet Food
I will prepare my own pet food to avoid plastic packaging.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodTake time to reflect or meditate over your plastic-free cup of tea. Share your thoughts and reflections with us here!
Kim Griffin 7/15/2022 12:13 PMMy sister brought me a gift from London of various loose leaf teas. It's my first time using loose leaf tea's at home and we love it! I don't know why I didn't use loose leaf teas sooner! It's been a great morning routine making tea, and knowing I have a plastic free cup of tea makes it more rewarding! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Kim Griffin 7/15/2022 12:10 PMMy kids and I walk or ride our bikes in our neighborhood weekly and we've made a game out of picking up litter in our community. There's no prize =) just bragging rights on who picked up the most trash or who filled up a bag of trash first. It's fun and it keeps our community clean. It's a great way for us to meet new neighbors and connect with neighbors we haven't seen in a while. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Kim Griffin 7/15/2022 12:07 PMThis is a normal routine for me and my family to reuse our grocery bags. We have bags in each car and we don't need to spend more money on bags we don't use/need. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Kim Griffin 7/15/2022 12:05 PMWhen I travel, I'm usually with my kids and it's more convenient for us to pack our own snacks and some meals in reusable containers. We save more money this way and I know exactly what my kids are eating. We reuse the containers and it makes it easier for us.
