Food

Cook a Plastic Free Meal

I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.

Switch to Loose Leaf Tea

Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.

All Natural Pet Toys

I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!

I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 15 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Pets
How could you reduce your waste even further (i.e. by making pet treats out of kitchen scraps or about-to-go-bad produce)?

I already do this all of the time. It's one of the things I love about rats; their diets are so similar to ours!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

The biggest issue is definitely K-cups. There are lots of reusable alternatives, but we would need one that removes the risk of the boiling water without buying a whole new, likely more plastic machine. I need to think more on that.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Pets
How are caring for your pet and caring for the environment connected for you?

I don't want my pets to be forced to participate in consumer culture.
