Kelly's actions
Personal Care
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Family
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 60 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Community
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 3 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Family
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 30 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 1 piece(s) of litter each day.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.

REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareWhat are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?
Kelly Hansen 7/22/2022 9:15 AMI haven't switched to this yet, but the kids and I have had a conversation about buying bamboo when our toothbrushes need replacing and looking into alternative toothpaste packaging when those run out. I have a back stock so it will take awhile. We've also decided to tell the dentist "No thank you" when he hands out the goody bag at the end of each cleaning. Not only is it a plastic bag, but everything in the bag is 100% plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Kelly Hansen 7/22/2022 9:12 AMI was hoping this would make me feel good. But instead I feel sad that so many people lack respect and pride in our community. It feels like a pointless act since there's so much. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Kelly Hansen 7/22/2022 9:11 AMI was wishful recycling a lot more than I thought. My recycler has switched to allowing certain shaped plastics rather than going off of the plastic number. This means the fruit containers I was throwing in the blue bin actually belong in the trash. My plastic bags can go to grocery stores and some take the plastic air pockets that come in shipments from places like Amazon. Scraps of fabric or torn clothing (including synthetic fibers) can be dropped at a local organization who repurposes them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?
Kelly Hansen 7/22/2022 8:23 AMI use less than most Americans but I still have room for improvement. I realized a lot of my plastic is from fruit/veggie packaging. I'm trying to reduce this by shopping at local farmers markets which will also support small businesses and reduce food miles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Kelly Hansen 7/22/2022 8:11 AMWe've been doing most of our grocery shopping at the farmers market. Some of the booths don't even have bags available and those that offer are grateful when I decline and pull out my reusable bags. It's much different at the bug box stores. Although our state has recently implemented a bag tax, there still seems to be a judgement when I ask to just put the items back in the cart instead of in bags.
