Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Lifestyle
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Personal Care
A Sustainable Flow
I will make the switch to sustainable, reusable period products.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 20 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Community
Attend an ACHS Webinar
Learn about how plastics are affecting our environment!
Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Lifestyle
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 20 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Personal Care
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Pets
All Natural Pet Toys
I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Family
Discover Together
I will spend 30 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Family
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 10 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by posting to my social media networks.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Food
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Food
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhy do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?
Kristen Hardegree 7/06/2022 5:45 PMI can find the brand Simply Gum and Simply Mints in paper or plastic. It's also a natural gum. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Kristen Hardegree 7/06/2022 5:44 PMI ordered groceries today and tried to make sure everything I bought was plastic-free. I know the produce will be in plastic bags, but I ordered things like peanut butter or rice in glass or paper. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Kristen Hardegree 7/06/2022 5:41 PMI printed out a sheet that shows what can and cannot be recycled for our fridge so my kids could also help recycle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHave you noticed a difference in how your community, friends, and family members use plastics since you've shared your own actions?
Kristen Hardegree 7/06/2022 5:34 PMI have not noticed a difference yet, but I shared some tips on swapping out styrofoam to-go containers on a local food business page. Many people sell food in my area but use plastic and styrofoam. I think sharing links for buying an alternative helped.-
Jacqui McGrath 7/07/2022 4:48 AMThat's a great step! On the consumer side, there's always the option to take a to-go container along for the take out (or leftovers). It took me a while to get in the habit, but now I even take one or two along on vacations so that I'll have them ...they inevitably get used!

Kristen Hardegree 7/03/2022 7:02 PMThe neighborhood kids always leave trash behind my house so I picked up some broken toys and balloons today. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?
