Pets

Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal

I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Lifestyle

Travel Eating

If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Say No to Styrofoam

Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Minimize Packaging

I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.

COMPLETED 16
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Go Strawless

I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Personal Care

Say No to "Flushable Wipes"

Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.

COMPLETED 14

Family

Plastic Free Lunch Boxes

I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and tupperware-like containers in my children's lunches to reduce plastic waste.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Lifestyle

Natural Fibers

When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle
What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

I am really paying attention to this issue now and making a conscious effort in every clothing purchase.  Not always easy on a budget.

We know you want to - tell us about why your pet is so awesome!

We just adopted two rescue kittens.  Easy practice to start
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family
Most of us know that the "3 R's" are reduce, reuse, recycle. Recycling is most heavily emphasized in modern Western culture. How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

This has been the easiest of all because our whole family already does this
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Personal Care
Even though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?

Our kitchen sink repeatedly backed up no matter what we did.  When we finally called the plumber, he couldn't figure out the problem.  The third plumber we called dug deep into the pipes and pulled out one "flushable" wipe.  Problem solved.  Conclusion:  there's no such thing as a "flushable" wipe.

I found the plastic challenge to be particularly difficult when shopping.  It seems everything is packaging within packaging.  Why does bacon require both plastic and cardboard?  At home, this challenge has helped me really get the excess plastic out of our home.  We even went into our storage unit and revamped what and how we are storing items.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
How might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?

When are they going to do away with Styrofoam completely?  I get angry when I see it.  It is just so unecessary.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Have you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

Switching to steel straws was easy and something I had already done. Better taste too.  I am frustrated by restaurants that continue to give me straws when I do not ask for them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

This is the hardest part of the challenge.  Sooo much packaging within packaging at the stores; it's incredibly frustrating.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle
Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

It's easy for me because I have a restricted diet and tend to travel with some of my own food anyway.  My family enjoys the change because we have fun shopping for and making our road snacks.
