Sue's actions
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Personal Care
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?
Sue Howard 7/24/2022 2:33 PMIt could be an environmental racism in some neighborhoods where non-white, Latino, Asian, other minorities may eat or take outmore meals at inexpensive restaurants like McDonald's, Taco Bell, Chinese restaurants and others where Styrofoam is widely used. They are less likely to or be able to afford the purchase re-useable containers to take with them in order to refuse Styrofoam. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodSince the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?
Sue Howard 7/05/2022 3:13 PMDon't go to restaurants or take out food places since Covid so using my own cups at home not a problem. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareEven though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?
Sue Howard 7/03/2022 11:57 AMDidn't know that but glad to be informed. However I only use any type of wipe occasionally and put it in with regular trash. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Sue Howard 7/03/2022 11:55 AMI have mobility difficulty and use a walker. Have not shopped and continue not to shop in grocery store and order through Instacart. Unfortunately have not been able to stop them from using plastic bag for fresh food items I order. Would not use them if I could return to in store shopping. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Sue Howard 7/03/2022 11:51 AMI keep a number of cloth bags in the trunk of my car to use whenever I shop in a store.
