Kirsten's actions

Food

Use a Reusable Mug

If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Advocate for Office Reusables

I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Tour A Waste Management Facility

I will spend at least 120 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Become a Recycling Pro

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 30 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Personal Care

Say No to "Flushable Wipes"

Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Skip Plastic Bags

When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 13
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Fill a Water Bottle

I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 13
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Keep My Community Clean

I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.

COMPLETED 13

Food

Minimize Packaging

I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Say No to Styrofoam

Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.

COMPLETED 9
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Choose Reusable Food Storage

I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Use Reusables at Work

I will use reusable dishes and silverware when eating at work.

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
What are some of the cases you could make to an employer for why switching to durable dishes and utensils is actually in their best interest as well?

it is cheaper in the long run, as you must constantly repurchase disposables. It also sends a message that you care about this world we share.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Personal Care
Even though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?

    Kirsten Hughes's avatar
    Kirsten Hughes 7/28/2022 12:37 PM
It is clearly not good for the environment.  The manufacturer is trying to be clever , putting corporate greed at the cost of our earth
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?

    Kirsten Hughes's avatar
    Kirsten Hughes 7/27/2022 6:08 AM
You see that you are all connected to the same place. We can get so caught up in what makes us different...political views, religions, race, etc ... but working as a team to clean your community you really appreciate that whatever our differences, we all call the same place home.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Since the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?

I have a few reusable mugs. I just wash well each night. I had them from camping and was used to just rinsing out and reusing.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

    Kirsten Hughes's avatar
    Kirsten Hughes 7/27/2022 6:04 AM
I already used re-usable bags. My biggest problem is remembering to bring to store.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

    Kirsten Hughes's avatar
    Kirsten Hughes 7/27/2022 6:03 AM
try to repurpose ... what do you already have that can fit the purpose
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
It is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?

    Kirsten Hughes 7/21/2022 10:08 AM
If people see you doing it, and you talk about it, they become more aware. Often times we may think we are just one person and therefor our one little plastic container doesn't really make a difference. People need to know that it truly dos make a difference. It is like that starfish story...I can't throw all the starfish back into the ocean, but I make a huge difference to the ones I can throw back in
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?

    Kirsten Hughes's avatar
    Kirsten Hughes 7/17/2022 8:21 AM
The best thing is awareness. People need to be educated about it before they can take action.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

    Kirsten Hughes's avatar
    Kirsten Hughes 7/17/2022 8:20 AM
Almost all items go in our single stream cans. Large items such as electronics can have arranged pick up. Motor oil goes to special places. We donate not needed clothes and furniture.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

    Kirsten Hughes's avatar
    Kirsten Hughes 7/15/2022 3:10 PM
The plastics have become thinner and less bulk.  I see more plastics made from recycled materials. These are good steps forward.
