Carla's actions
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 3 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Food
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Lifestyle
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day.
Personal Care
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Lifestyle
Clean cleaning
I will use washable towels for cleaning/dusting instead of paper towels.
Lifestyle
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Carla James 7/28/2022 2:41 PMDuring this month, I made a conscious effort to reduce my plastic usage and it has carried over into wanting to reduce waste totally. I will continue my new changes. -
Carla James 7/11/2022 4:51 AMStarting week two of the challenge, I am more conscientious about the items I buy and use. I look for ways to cut my plastic usage as well as my overall conservation efforts. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Carla James 7/09/2022 9:53 AMWhen refilling my travel containers, I save money and only take as much product as I need. -
Carla James 7/07/2022 7:53 AMI’m encouraged to see the amount of waste I’ve cut just in 1 week. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodDo an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?
Carla James 7/04/2022 8:19 AMMy sealable plastic bags can be replaced with reusable sealable bags. Less waste and I can control the portion of snacks, nuts, and vegetables consumed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Carla James 7/04/2022 8:17 AMUsing reusable utensils instead of plastic, not only helps the environment, but it is healthier. Keeping your own utensils clean ensures no one else has touched them which has the potential to transfer germs. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Carla James 7/04/2022 8:15 AMI take pride in my community by keeping it clean. I also have the opportunity to be an example for others in my community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Carla James 7/02/2022 7:29 PMI recently traveled and used my reusable bottles. I have them already marked which made my packing quick and easy. I can actually save money as well as the environment with reusing my bottles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareEven though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleOften, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?
Carla James 7/02/2022 7:25 PMI started purchasing Tide pods which have a fabric softener included. Better for the environment and my wallet. Unfortunately the Tide Pods are not in a reusable container. I’ll work on that.
