Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Personal Care
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.

Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day.

Krystina Jarvis 8/01/2022 1:11 PMWe did it, team!! Plastic Free Ecochallenge 2022 is in the books! How did this month go for you? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Krystina Jarvis 7/31/2022 2:22 PMMost of my waste was food-related. Some things I can better avoid (take out and last-minute on the go snacks, for example), but overall I'm feeling pretty okay with my audit! I've been trying to cook at home more and plan ahead better for when I'm going to be away from home to have unpackaged snacks with me. I always love this exercise. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleAs you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?
Krystina Jarvis 7/29/2022 3:06 PMI've learned that I don't really buy anything outside of items for "health and safety" anyway, but I do enjoy meeting friends at our favorite local cidery, which obviously isn't for health or safety 😅 Other than that I don't really buy anything except food so now I just need to refocus my efforts to cook at home more. -
Krystina Jarvis 7/25/2022 10:16 PMBig win today! Before COVID I always took my own glass containers to the butcher but since then I've gotten out of the habit. Today I finally worked up the courage to try it again and it worked! It was sooo convenient because the container I had them put it in was the same I was cooking in so it meant less waste and less mess. Big win for this year's Plastic Free Ecochallenge for me! 🥳 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodSince the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?
Krystina Jarvis 7/13/2022 12:50 PMMy closest Starbucks is a drive-thru only. Pre-covid days, they allowed personal cups but they still aren't allowing them anymore. This challenge has made me more aware of how often I would still go there out of convenience, when there are several other local coffee shops that are happy to use my personal cups - while being able to support local business.
Mainly from this challenge so far I've been more intentional about making coffee at home and not getting coffee out and about, but when I am on the go, I've become so aware of whether or not I have a personal cup with me.
No cup = no coffee.
This used to be easy for me pre-covid, but this challenge has really helped get me back into the habit! -

Cheer a teammate on, offer suggestions, or ask follow-up questions 💙 -
Krystina Jarvis 7/11/2022 7:09 PMBeing sick and having no appetite really helps with the not buying anything thing 😂 I hope everyone else's week is off to a great start!-
