KEEP IT UPCYCLE

Post to our Team APE feed about an item that you "upcycled" or "creatively reused" and thereby avoided consuming plastic associated with buying a new item and having that item sent to you/your area!

Community

Become a Recycling Pro

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

Food

Go Strawless

I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.

Take a moment to estimate how many disposable daily contacts you may have used over the years. What would be your impact now of switching to a contact brand with a longer lifespan?

Interesting to do this research about contact lens recycling! It makes me realize how much burden we put on individuals instead of thinking about systems. The reflection asks: how much impact if I switch to a brand with a longer lifespan; I use 2 week contacts because that's what is best for my health, based on my doctor's recommendations. The recycle centers for these materials are not in places I normally go -- is the VMT and extra time worth it? I don't know! These systems feel like they are designed to pass the burden from corporations and governments to me, though.

The "things need a place" part of me struggles with not putting each item in a bag, but it's been JUST FINE! to throw most produce in the cart and let it roll around. Haven't lost a jalapeño through the bottom of the cart yet!
