Dan's actions
Lifestyle
KEEP IT UPCYCLE
Post to our Team APE feed about an item that you "upcycled" or "creatively reused" and thereby avoided consuming plastic associated with buying a new item and having that item sent to you/your area!
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Personal Care
See the Green
I will recycle used contact lenses and packaging.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareTake a moment to estimate how many disposable daily contacts you may have used over the years. What would be your impact now of switching to a contact brand with a longer lifespan?
Dan Keeffe 7/29/2022 8:59 AMInteresting to do this research about contact lens recycling! It makes me realize how much burden we put on individuals instead of thinking about systems. The reflection asks: how much impact if I switch to a brand with a longer lifespan; I use 2 week contacts because that's what is best for my health, based on my doctor's recommendations. The recycle centers for these materials are not in places I normally go -- is the VMT and extra time worth it? I don't know! These systems feel like they are designed to pass the burden from corporations and governments to me, though. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Dan Keeffe 7/28/2022 9:06 AMThe "things need a place" part of me struggles with not putting each item in a bag, but it's been JUST FINE! to throw most produce in the cart and let it roll around. Haven't lost a jalapeño through the bottom of the cart yet!
