Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.

REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareCurrently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?
Sydney Kilgore 7/18/2022 8:29 PMSupporting those that offer these plastic-free option and sharing these options with those around you can help create a demand for these plastic free options. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareWhat have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?
Sydney Kilgore 7/18/2022 8:28 PMI am definitely saving money in the long run by switching my razor option. In that sense it definitely does feel like a marketing strategy to encourage buying an unnecessary amount of things. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Sydney Kilgore 7/18/2022 8:25 PMWhen buying clothing made of natural fibers, you don’t run the risk of releasing microfiber plastics into the environment every time you wash those items. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyHow can you take your commitment to sustainable living beyond yourself and your family? How can you, personally, work toward broader change?
Sydney Kilgore 7/18/2022 8:23 PMI could look into sustainable practices that my community participated in and advocate for those practices when those options are not available easily. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyDoes your child play differently with natural or repurposed toys than with other toys? If so, how?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?
Sydney Kilgore 7/06/2022 9:18 AMI found out that I consume more plastic than I realized. This is more through clothing and household products. My family is pretty good about decreasing some obvious single use plastics. We are going to look more into how we can decrease plastic consumption in our personal care products, cleaners and foods now. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Sydney Kilgore 7/03/2022 6:47 PMCleaning up trash from my community helps give me more ownership of where I’m living. We should take pride in our homes and communities and keeping them clean is one way to show that. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsWe know you want to - tell us about why your pet is so awesome!
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleHow easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?
Sydney Kilgore 7/03/2022 6:41 PMThis swap wasn’t the most difficult for me. I previously used soap bars for dish soap and hand soap pre-Covid/baby and just needed to convince my partner that we could make the swap.
