Climate change and biodiversity loss via use of fossil fuels and development. I don’t see political help anywhere on the horizon which greatly saddens me. Sussex County DE is the new retirement target, so land is being developed very fast to accommodate the influx. Why can’t it be stopped?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Dig into Bioplastics
What did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?

    Jennifer Dusek's avatar
    Jennifer Dusek 7/31/2022 8:08 PM
Bioplastics aren’t the answer unfortunately. It’s a cart before the horse situation. Not enough commercial composting facilities exist to manage proper disposal. There are none in DE.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Learn about Plastic Production
What did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?

    Jennifer Dusek's avatar
    Jennifer Dusek 7/31/2022 8:05 PM
I could write an essay on this! The basic lesson is to think about the negative effects the production of that piece of plastic has on people and the environment before purchasing it. Plastic is horrible IN the environment but much WORSE getting there! Climate change and environmental justice problems galore. So, even if it’s recyclable, it should only be purchased if no other option exists (or whether you need it in the first place).

How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?

This cleanup was planned on short notice, so only 2 people came BUT one was pageant queen Mrs. Delaware! Both participants walked to the event, which told me they're definitely committed to protecting the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Minimize Packaging
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

    Jennifer Dusek's avatar
    Jennifer Dusek 7/30/2022 1:42 PM
I've noticed it isn't impossible to find options with reduced or no packaging. Some items yes, but the produce section is the best example of a space you can make change. I've even passed on buying something packaged in one store because I know I can get it loose in another. Not everyone has that luxury I realize, but if you do, take it and make a difference.
The other day at a farm market, I bought mushrooms in that typical pint sized blue/green cardboard container. The cashier grabbed a plastic produce bag to transfer them into, but I said no need and just dumped them in my reusable bag. I'm an adult and don't intend to fling it around or throw it across the parking lot, so they're fine.

    Community Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

    Jennifer Dusek's avatar
    Jennifer Dusek 7/30/2022 1:38 PM
It makes me pay attention to what I find and think about where/who it may have come from. Ironically, since I started picking it up in early July, I've found less and have to travel farther to reach my quota. Could it be people see me and decide not to toss/drop garbage as they move around the neighborhood? Or was I seeing a cumulative effect that hasn't had a chance to build again since I'm out there often? I hope it's the former but fear it's the latter.

Personal Care Donate Zero Waste Period Products
How can having access to zero waste period products help people who menstruate overcome barriers to education or other opportunities?

    Jennifer Dusek's avatar
    Jennifer Dusek 7/29/2022 6:43 AM
Oh the period! Luckily, I live in a country where management of it is easy as products are readily available, albeit plastic "in my day". Periods are difficult enough without them also preventing you from getting an education as they do in 3rd world countries. Staying at home for a week simply isn't fair! That's essentially punishment for being a woman. Not cool. Zero waste products mean girls will always have products when the time comes, so it's built in security. I didn't know about Femme Int'l until this challenge and I'm glad it gave me the opportunity to help by donating a kit. I'm thinking of making it a monthly thing, cuz hey, I'll have a personal reminder for a number of years still!

Community Tour A Waste Management Facility
Landfills and recycling centers tell us a lot about our communities and purchasing habits. What did you glean from your tour?

    Jennifer Dusek's avatar
    Jennifer Dusek 7/28/2022 6:15 AM
All recycling for the state of DE goes to the center we visited. There is a landfill in each county, however. I was thrilled to learn much of the material is sold and sent to companies IN THE US, primarily the East Coast. Most people, myself included, assume it goes overseas. Educators also stressed that while a lot of (cool) technology is used to sort recyclables, PEOPLE are also needed. So, it's important to remember to only include proper items for health and safety reasons first and foremost.

We're in the final 4 days team! Do your best to check off all those Actions...and you can pop back to the original list and add any extras too. Maybe you felt it was too much at the beginning but now feel so inspired and empowered, you can knock them out! Don't forget to answer Reflection Questions. It would be great if you could also add a post here and tell people about your experience this month. Scroll the Feed and get to learn your coworkers and zoo volunteers better.

It's time to congratulate the winner of Week 3....Carole Webber!! The DZS Visitor Service Associate & Membership Coordinator prevented 122 pieces of plastic from lingering in the environment last week. To assist Carole in her plastic free journey, she will be receiving a bamboo dental travel kit!! Inside is a toothbrush with case, floss picks, cotton swabs and toothpaste (clearly not bamboo lol).  In total the team has collected over 800 pieces so far this month WOOT WOOT
