  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Pets
In what ways does your pet make your life happier, more interesting, or more rewarding?

They make me laugh and they ae also the best cuddlers. They are excited every single time I walk through the door whether I've been gone for 30 seconds or 8 hours.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Personal Care
What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

    Jess Kohring's avatar
    Jess Kohring 7/18/2022 10:27 AM
It tends to be cheaper in the long term as we buy bars in bulk.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family
What did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?

    Jess Kohring's avatar
    Jess Kohring 7/18/2022 10:26 AM
This is a constant discussion in our household. One only needs to take a drive through various neighborhoods in LA and see the inequitable impacts on neighborhoods of color. We talk through what environmental justice means and what actions we can take as individuals as well as the systemic challenges and ways that we can use our influence to affect broader change.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family
How can you and your little one exercise your creativity without creating more plastic waste?

    Jess Kohring's avatar
    Jess Kohring 7/18/2022 10:23 AM
We've been working to use hole punchers to create our more environmentally friendly "glitter." I've also been advocating for the after school programs to make the switch. It's more satisfying overall for the kids to be able to make their own so it makes the process longer and more complete.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Pets
We know you want to - tell us about why your pet is so awesome!

    Jess Kohring's avatar
    Jess Kohring 7/18/2022 10:22 AM
Because they are giant goofballs that make me laugh constantly.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

    Jess Kohring's avatar
    Jess Kohring 7/18/2022 10:21 AM
The most difficult part of recycling is ensuring that everything is clean and not contaminated.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

    Jess Kohring's avatar
    Jess Kohring 7/18/2022 10:20 AM
It inspires others to do the same. It's a ripple effect. It also requires planning ahead a bit to ensure that you have the tools/supplies needed.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family
How does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?

    Jess Kohring's avatar
    Jess Kohring 7/13/2022 9:52 AM
We're started to prep a bit more and have a snack drawer filled with fruits and veggies in the fridge and baskets filled with them on the counter. It's made it easier to get the vitamins, minerals, and fiber into our family and allows the kids to be more independent in their snacking.

I found that pre-kids I was much more strict on my consumption. As life became more overwhelming and full, some of those practices fell away. We still are much more conscious than most of the people around us but there are things that we utilize out of convenience with 3 kids that I didn't use before.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

    Jess Kohring's avatar
    Jess Kohring 7/05/2022 9:26 AM
Figuring out how to do this while keeping my sanity with 3 young kids is my biggest challenge. We are very conscious of plastic usage but the convenience of snacks that are easy to travel with is challenging. We typically choose the lesser of all evils in terms of the packaging but it's still evil.
