Bradley's actions
Lifestyle
Use a Reusable Cup at Starbucks
Use a reusable cup for your Starbucks beverage.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 30 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Lifestyle
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Lifestyle
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Family
Discover Together
I will spend 20 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 6 piece(s) of litter each day.
Food
Use Reusables at Work
I will use reusable dishes and silverware when eating at work.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Personal Care
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 30 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodIt is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?
Bradley Lehman 7/16/2022 7:56 PMAt work I always take in reusable cups to use. I thank anyone who brings in their own reusable cup for using one, partner or customer. When ringing up a partner I ask if for here dishes can be used, or if I'm on bar about to make a beverage I ask if the label doesn't already say. I periodically thank the store team in the work app we utilize for helping. I just try to stay positive and reinforce the practice. Also I love using the baskets to fill up with reusables for customers to purchase and now get to let them know they earn 25 bonus stars when using them! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Bradley Lehman 7/16/2022 7:49 PMIt's created more of awareness. The older I've gotten the less time I take the time to look around my own neighborhood. Growing up here I kind of took it for granted, so it's created new appreciation and has fostered a desire to find local volunteering opportunities to help clean up on a larger scale. Seeing the liter now more makes me sad. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Bradley Lehman 7/13/2022 4:22 PMI would say I've noticed a shift in just a general acceptance. As more businesses go the strawless, or paper straw route, people are going to accept it more. Once they get over that initial hump of drinking without a straw, they go over it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodSince the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?
Bradley Lehman 7/08/2022 7:43 PMWell as everyone on here might already know, when I take my reusable cup to work with me, we use a coffee mug to handle the reusable cup, in order to avoid handling it. It works magnificently. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleHow easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?
Bradley Lehman 7/06/2022 7:27 PMThe easiest. Zero concerns. The brand of dish soap I use sells refills at Target. Just had to look around and found them! Super excited. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleOften, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?
Bradley Lehman 7/06/2022 7:23 PMWater bottles. Stop buying cases of bottled water. It's infuriating. This is directed mostly at my family. I gave my mom a water pitcher. My one sister owns one, and my other sister has a water dispenser thing. They know it's harmful, but they do it anyway. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Bradley Lehman 7/06/2022 11:59 AMEven though I've owned reusable bags for a few years now, I tend to leave them in a cabinet under the kitchen sink. I'm not one to typically plan a grocery run, I will usually stop on the way home from work or while I'm randomly out and about. It's so simple, but the article on tips for using reusable bags was really a aha moment for me. They will live in my car from now on! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Bradley Lehman 7/02/2022 7:04 AMWhat most surprised me about recycling in general was that for years the US shipped its waste to China. It is mind boggling to think a country wouldn't deal with its own waste, and now that we are, there are challenges we're facing. If maybe we dealt with it from the beginning, we would have a better system in place, more comprehensive laws.
Just being mindful of what could contaminate my entire recycling bin worth of waste can be challenging, and not wishfully recycling.-
Gina Dullanty 7/05/2022 8:13 PMWhen I was in California it was the way they recycled. Everything in the bin and they’ll sort… which we all know never happens.
Love the insight here Bradley. -
Starbucks Team 7/05/2022 7:03 AMSo well said Bradley! We often do “waste audits” to see if we’re doing all we can do reduce. Every person and every piece of waste matters.
