Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Personal Care
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"

Family
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 4 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Lifestyle
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Community
Watch a Plastic themed documentary.
Watch film "Smog of the Sea" to learn more about the impact of plastic in our oceans. Be inspired by the unique crew and see that anyone can make a difference.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Community
Host a Watch Party
I will host a watch party with friends and/or colleagues to watch and discuss a movie about plastics.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodSince the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?
Cynthia Link-Kinney 7/25/2022 11:50 AMUsing a personal cup has been second nature to me, even before Covid. When working in groups of multiple people, especially in the medical field, having a drink available is key so each person had their own cup. this has helped benefit to making it a life long habit for myself and my family -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Cynthia Link-Kinney 7/25/2022 10:05 AMReusing containers is something my whole family does. Whenever we have takeout the containers must be reusable plastic and if we go anywhere for dinner we will take a container for leftovers to avoid getting a styrofoam container. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Cynthia Link-Kinney 7/25/2022 10:01 AMthere are many more people choosing reusable straws on a regular basis The sale of reusable straws can be seen in every store to encourage people to switch. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Cynthia Link-Kinney 7/25/2022 9:52 AMWhen shopping I have noticed that many products are now being packaged in reusable plastic containers instead of styrofoam to help the environment -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareEven though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?
Cynthia Link-Kinney 7/22/2022 9:44 PMThe misleading labels and advertisements are used to blind people to the truth of what they are really doing while believing it is helping the environment. Many people by these products for the convenience without true knowledge, I try to inform friends & family of the truth in hopes that they will also spread the correct information. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleHow easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?
Cynthia Link-Kinney 7/22/2022 9:39 PMThis was a fairly easy switch for our family. We have limited the amount of disposable containers throughout the house and adding another was easy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsHow does buying used differ from buying new? How does each purchasing decision make you feel?
Cynthia Link-Kinney 7/08/2022 1:53 PMBuying something previously loved allows my to save money on the reusable things my pets need. Its a good feeling knowing there are many items not going into a landfill -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?
Cynthia Link-Kinney 7/04/2022 7:12 AMRaw and fresh fruits and veggies have better benefits to my families health as prepackaged have been processed and usually are loaded with preservatives -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Cynthia Link-Kinney 7/04/2022 7:10 AMKeeping our community clean helps make everyone happier. If there is trash around everyone gets more depressed and discouraged about their community -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsHow are caring for your pet and caring for the environment connected for you?
