Elizabeth's actions
Family
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 3 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Pets
All Natural Pet Toys
I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Lifestyle
Homemade Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products at home.
Family
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 20 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Family
Discover Together
I will spend 20 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Family
Water balloons
After playing with water balloons out in the yard, be sure to pick up the balloon pieces. We don't want birds or squirrels to mistake the brightly collored pieces on the ground for food. They would get sick.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by posting to my social media networks.
Personal Care
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 6 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Lifestyle
Plastic-Free Documentaries
Watch a plastic-free advocacy documentary available online. Spend at least 20 minutes.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Community
Raise Money For a Nonprofit
I will raise money to support a nonprofit dedicated to plastic pollution reduction.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 10 piece(s) of litter each day.
Food
Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.
Food
Advocate for Plastic-Free Dining
I will talk to the owner or manager of a restaurant I frequent to request that they reduce their use of single-use and disposable plastics.
Family
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Community
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 20 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Lifestyle
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).

Elizabeth Loehe 7/31/2022 6:43 AMLater today I'm going to try to make a bird feeder out of distilled-water gallon plastic container. But I need to go buy colored duct-tape first to cover the cut edges so no one gets cut! -
Elizabeth Loehe 7/30/2022 4:59 AMTwo days left, let's keep our focus! -
Elizabeth Loehe 7/29/2022 5:36 AMSomeone once told me, "You have a brain and a mouth. Use them both. In that order!" This eco-challenge is great for getting us all to think more about our plastic waste actions! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPets All Natural Pet ToysIn what ways is supplying your pet with all natural pet toys better for your pet, better for you, and better for the environment?
Elizabeth Loehe 7/28/2022 4:55 AMUsing all natural dog toys keeps some plastic out. Our dogs often chew on the toys and may be swallowing some of the plastic. So all natural toys are safer for them. -
Elizabeth Loehe 7/27/2022 5:09 AMI learned that a number of companies are starting to employ chemical recycling, to increase the 10% of plastic actually being recycled. One partner is Eastman, here in eastern Tennesse (we are visiting a daughter here). I'm not sure exactly which groupds of plastic waster are being handles. Carpets are definitely mentioned. I want to learn more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPets Thrifty PetsHow does buying used differ from buying new? How does each purchasing decision make you feel?
Elizabeth Loehe 7/27/2022 5:02 AMDaughter's dogs, cats, and horses all use recycled containers for food and water! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Homemade CleanersWhat did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?
Elizabeth Loehe 7/26/2022 4:58 AMI found a recipe for bathtub scrub which is mostly baking soda. I am away from home now, but will try it this weekend. -
Elizabeth Loehe 7/25/2022 4:48 AMI decided to stop buying the plastic gallon containers of distilled water I currently use with my daily neti-pot routine. I can boil water and store in glass quart jars instead. That's about 12 less plastic containers a year. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Learn about Environmental JusticeWhat did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?
Elizabeth Loehe 7/25/2022 4:46 AMI learned that environmental justice is a very broad term, including lead paint in old houses, living next to chemical plants, and even insecticides and pesticides from farming. My daughter the small farmer is organic, and I will double-check with her as to her neighbors. I don't care for everything being called 'justice', that's a hot button. -
Elizabeth Loehe 7/24/2022 3:40 AMLeading by example is working well, for family and friends.
