REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Victoria Lorenzo 7/28/2022 11:53 AMI feel at a paradox here. I'd love to join a cleanup, because I want to give back to the community and the environment. But I don't own boots like the ones used for these things and I don't want to buy a new pair because I don't need a pair for anything else. Can anyone who's been to cleanups suggest any other type of footwear that would work? I have water shoes because I love watersports, but I'm worried that they might get ruined? I appreciate any tips :) -
Victoria Lorenzo 7/11/2022 9:18 PMSo I've read multiple times that reusable tote bags need to be reused a pretty large number of times to justify the energy it takes to produce them. So last time I noticed I was running low on reusable bags, I made one from an old t-shirt. This is specially cool as it's repurposing a t-shirt I would no longer use (you can give a second life to your fave t-shirt when it's no longer usable!). For anyone interested, this is the technique I followed (bonus: it doesn't require any sewing!) https://mommypotamus.com/no-sew-t-shirt-tote-bag-tutorial/-
Paola Andrea Suarez 7/13/2022 3:40 PMThe life unplastic discount is mentioned on the July 11th email from our group captain Emily. Here's the note: "-20% off purchases at Life Unplastic (in store show dashboard. Online use code “July22” at www.lifeunplastic.com)"

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleAs you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?
Victoria Lorenzo 7/09/2022 9:33 AMHow do you transmit this to others? Specifically others that love you and care about what you think. My mom for example has always been frustrated that I never want to go shopping with her. I've always had a tiny closet and appreciated keeping it tidy, so never wanted to buy more because it would clutter my closet. How do you make others appreciate what they have already and see the value of not buying more?-
Joanna Caputa 7/09/2022 11:34 AMWow Victoria, that is such a good question. I wish I had an easy answer. I can tell you about what effected a huge personal change in my life. Last year our entire home was lost in a flood during TS Elsa. There were 5 giant trash hauling bins that carted much of our home and at least 70% of our belongings away to the landfill. It was an instant downsizing of so many things that we have had to learn to live without this year. All our stuff is just stuff and I think we have to ask ourselves, "How much time, money, and energy do we want to commit to purchasing and caring for inanimate objects that can be destroyed in a moments notice?" I can tell you that once we get on our feet again, we will intentionally own a whole lot less. Why not suggest to your mom other ways you can spend time together that don't involve purchasing things? Going to lunch or having coffee together, doing a craft together, taking a hike, visiting a park, etc. You would still be building your relationship but not in a way that involves buying stuff. Who knows, maybe your mom can slowly be influenced through conversations about your values as you spend time together!
