Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.

I will spend 10 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.

Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.

When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Laura Lynn 7/31/2022 7:05 PMThe ejscreen tool linked with this action was very useful. There is definite overlap of areas with the most pollution/environmental hazards and communities of low income/POC. -
Laura Lynn 7/31/2022 6:44 PMLast day! I will try to continue the habits I started here! -
Laura Lynn 7/30/2022 7:33 PMTalking climate change and plastic impacts with Mom today. Mostly depressing, but there are always efforts that can help. -
Laura Lynn 7/29/2022 12:19 PMKelly Hanson a I are neck and neck! I don't think I can keep up, but I'll try! -
Laura Lynn 7/28/2022 6:21 PMTraveling with my Airgami mask!
It can be cleaned and disinfected at home dozens of times, so less plastic waste with the same N95 protection! -
Laura Lynn 7/27/2022 9:25 PMI will be away from home traveling for the next few days. It will be a bit more challenging to keep up my plastic-free practices, but I will give it my best effort! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Laura Lynn 7/26/2022 5:02 PMI read somewhere fibers from clothing are one of the most common types of microplastics in waterways. Natural fibers do not create plastic waste during the production process. They also do not shed plastic when laundered. -
Laura Lynn 7/26/2022 4:53 PMI can't stand the texture of bamboo toothbrushes! In the past I used brushes made out of recycled plastic, but I found these recently: Fine Toothbrush | Boie USA. You can reuse the handle and if you return the heads, the company will recycle them! -
Laura Lynn 7/26/2022 9:53 AMIn addition to Fertile Ground as a recycling option, I am also looking into https://recyclops.com/
They don't list OKC proper as a location they collect from, but they do service surrounding areas. -
Laura Lynn 7/25/2022 7:21 PMMy apartment complex does not recycle (an issue in and of itself), so I have to take my recyclables elsewhere. This is an old photo, but it is like this every time I go to the city recycling drop off east of the zoo!!
I have tried contacting Waste Management about it a few different times, but they have done nothing to improve things. No wonder they say most things don't get recycled even if they go in the bin! It is really discouraging and does not motivate me to continue hauling my recyclables to the site! I may start driving them to Norman again, as their facility seems to be better managed and doesn't look like a giant trash heap!-

Kelly Dillow 7/26/2022 5:28 AMIf you have other people in your apartment interested in recycling you might talk to you apartment about contracting with Fertile Ground, you can also drop off recylables with them for a donation (closer than Norman).
