We’ve made some small changes to eliminate plastic (replaced applesauce cups with a large glass bottle of applesauce, no more single serving olive cups, etc.) and are making sure we are using all the reusable containers and bottles we have!

With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

We have always made an effort to buy less plastic when shopping but this activity made me realize that there are still some that we purchase that we could replace with only a little more effort on our part.

We replaced our dog waste pick up bags with biodegradable/compostable plastic. Of course, that can’t go to an industrial place for compost because it has dog waste. We have switched to glass travel containers, steel or glass reusable water bottles and coffee travel mugs, and compostable zip top bags only to be used when absolutely necessary. It isn’t enough! I have to remind myself constantly not to buy that more conveniently cut fruit or the already packed individual snack or that drink on the run when I don’t have my reusable cup with me. It is more challenging than it should be because of the culture of convenience we live in. I see the trash piling up in recycling bins all over the place and I think “most of the world isn’t even doing the bare minimum. How will it ever get better?”
