  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Dig into Bioplastics
What did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?

An important piece in information is that just because a specific type of plastic is created from biomass, doesn't mean that it's biodegradable. So while it's coming from a renewable resource (food), it can still contribute to all the waste and landfills we have. Furthermore, turning biomass into plastic still creates a fairly large carbon footprint and you'd need a lot of biomass to completely replace normal plastic. Bioplastic does have a lot of benefits, but it is not a solution to normal plastic.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle Homemade Cleaners
What did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?

    Adam Moen's avatar
    Adam Moen 7/21/2022 6:57 AM
It takes a lot more time to make everything then to simple buy it. Which is why it's so much easier to buy. But thankfully I've always loved arts and craft activities. So I already have time set aside to do those things. I can make the cleaning products as I need them at the times I already have set aside. It makes managing it a lot easier.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Research Local Waste Sites
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

    Adam Moen's avatar
    Adam Moen 7/21/2022 6:55 AM
I looked at my county and found the data lines up with the idea that race and income affect landfill and waste sites. The richer cities in my county are more predominantly white and are much further from landfills, and safer from waste contamination. While the opposite is true for poorer cities.

Even if there's only 10 days left to go, I know a lot of the practices I've been trying are things that I will continue to do. Our impact doesn't end with this challenge, we can continue to make a change and help the world around us.

If you're on main campus today, I'd suggest checking out the farmers market! It's well worth it with lots of interesting stands.
