Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Food
Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.

Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
Food
Use Reusables at Work
I will use reusable dishes and silverware when eating at work.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Lifestyle
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Family
Discover Together
I will spend 30 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Personal Care
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Community
Host a Watch Party
I will host a watch party with friends and/or colleagues to watch and discuss a movie about plastics.
Personal Care
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Personal Care
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Family
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Family
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 60 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.

REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareEven though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?
Kaysea Moody 7/06/2022 2:59 PMI’ve slowly moved away from using these wipes over time. However, learning that they release micro plastics into our waterways definitely gives me the extra push I need to get rid of them completely. While they’ve come in handy, especially with kids around, it’s time to say goodbye to the wipes and look for more sustainable alternatives. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Kaysea Moody 7/06/2022 2:58 PMThere are so many different environmental concerns; global warming, waste disposal, water pollution, climate change, etc. Locally, -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?
Kaysea Moody 7/06/2022 2:50 PMWith all of the changes I’ve made over the last couple of years, I felt relatively good about my plastic use. Obviously single use plastics are something that’s extremely hard to completely avoid. Even with keeping a conscious mind I learned that I’m using a lot more plastic than I thought I was. Seeing how many kg’s I contribute to our landfills in a year has me brainstorming on more ways that I can reduce my impact. There’s always room for improvement! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhy do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?
Kaysea Moody 7/01/2022 3:23 PMI chew gum because it helps me focus. I can think better and more clearly if I can fidget a little bit. I'm not sure what habits I could pick up to replace chewing gum because I'm pretty addicted to the motion. When I have a rubber straw in my drink I notice myself chewing on that as well. I'm excited to look at new habits that might help me use less gum, and to also look into more eco-friendly gums. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Kaysea Moody 7/01/2022 3:18 PMBy picking up litter you're showing pride for your community and helping to beautify it a little more. Not only that, but it helps to protect the local wildlife and gives you the opportunity to spread awareness to your community. -
Kaysea Moody 7/01/2022 3:06 PMSo excited to start another Plastic Free July challenge! I'm eager to make bigger and better changes this year!
