Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.

Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 10 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Community
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Pets
Homemade Pet Treats
I will prepare my own pet treats to avoid plastic packaging.

Sustainable Suds: Pet Edition

Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by posting to my social media networks.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.

Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Personal Care
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Personal Care
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.

I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Food
Advocate for Plastic-Free Dining
I will talk to the owner or manager of a restaurant I frequent to request that they reduce their use of single-use and disposable plastics.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Food
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Lifestyle
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.

Lifestyle
Proper Bioplastic Disposal
I will spend at least 15 minutes researching how to properly dispose of bioplastics in my city and share this information with 3 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Lifestyle
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.

Brandon Morrissett 7/13/2022 2:23 PMThis challenge has given me the kick I need to try so many new things. Here's hoping I can form at least a few new good environmental habits this month. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsWe know you want to - tell us about why your pet is so awesome!
Brandon Morrissett 7/13/2022 2:19 PMI have 3 amazing pets! I have my Australian Shephard named Kano. He's incredibly smart, but also ridiculously goofy, playful and loving. I have my queen of the house Pharah. She's a tiny little grey and orange Russian Blue cat. She is sassy and absolutely runs the place, but she turns to a full on baby around me. She loves head scratches. Lastly I have an albino Hedgehog named Rose. She is the oldest in my house and the most bashful. She loves mealworms and running. I'm gonna stop there cause I could talk about those little buggers all day lol. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsDoes making your own pet food seem like a habit you can keep up in the long term? What else can you do to reduce your use of plastic packaging that can come from taking care of your pet's needs?
Brandon Morrissett 7/13/2022 10:38 AMI think so. It's fun to cook for people and see the joy it brings them, and no one expresses that joy as much as my Dog over warm plate of food! Not to mention he loves rice and eggs and so do I so it makes it very easy. I'm still searching for more ways to knock plastic out of my pets care routines. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Brandon Morrissett 7/10/2022 11:45 AMI didn't realize how many automotive parts were non recyclable. I feel like a lot of it makes sense when you think about it, but it's always smart to double check city recycling guidelines. There were quite a few things listed that I wouldn't have thought of to recycle! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareWhat have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?
Brandon Morrissett 7/09/2022 12:26 PMDisposable razors most definitely seem like a scam to sell merchandise. Having a nice steel razor is not only far less wasteful, It also cost you way less in the end, and makes for a far better shave. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsHow could you reduce your waste even further (i.e. by making pet treats out of kitchen scraps or about-to-go-bad produce)?
Brandon Morrissett 7/09/2022 12:24 PMI used to have a pair of sugar gliders I would feed my produce when it was close to going bad. I should get into the habit of making dog treats out of it now! I could also make batches for my friends as well!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Brandon Morrissett 7/09/2022 12:18 PMA sharing economy can be hugely beneficial for far more than just ecological reasons. It helps build a feeling of community and friendship, as well as trust between neighbors. It's important to be able to work with and help those around us and trust they would do the same. We can only benefit from helping each other. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodDo an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?
Brandon Morrissett 7/09/2022 12:14 PMSwitching from buying mixes to making homemade foods such as tortillas, pancakes, fries, salads, etc I've noticed that just in one meal I knock down my plastic waste quite a bit. A meal that used to leave behind 3 or 4 empty plastic sacks now leaves none. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhy do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?
Brandon Morrissett 7/09/2022 10:40 AMA lot of the time, I feel like just the chewing part of chewing gum can feel a little addictive. Maybe it comes from an oral fixation but I just love chewing on things. I've started having light small snacks with me, things like nuts, fruit, raisins, anything small that I can just pop in real quick. -
Brandon Morrissett 7/09/2022 10:35 AMTried finding a bamboo toothbrush at the pharmacy yesterday and sadly no dice :( . Hoping for better luck tonight grocery shopping!
