    Lifestyle
How easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?

I'm still unsure about bar soap, but I did buy the biggest bulk container of my dish soap to use as to refill. It's nice because it's overall cheaper, and I don't have to keep remembering to buy it as often. I belong to a wholesale club so I had some really good options. I've also tried to be more mindful of how much I use. I don't need nearly as much soap to get my dishes clean as I use to.

    Personal Care
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

I love shopping second hand. It's so much cheaper and it feels like a bit of a treasure hunt. There's way more high quality items then I would've expected before trying it a few years ago. I especially buy second hand for kiddos in my life. They outgrow everything so quickly it just makes no sense to buy brand new clothes. Plus, especially in younger kids sizes, most kids outgrow things so quickly that there's tons of second hand options that are very very good quality.

Disposable tampons and menstrual pads are often quite expensive. What are the economic and personal benefits of this switch for you?

I have always had to buy a certain brand due to sensitive skin, so products have always been quite expensive for me. I was so surprised to see how inexpensive some of the options are. They're more comfortable by far and absorb so much more. I've used cloth diapers for children I've cared for, so I don't know why I didn't make the switch sooner. It's also great to not have so much trash every month. I've always had to be extra cautious with that, because my dog tends to get into the garbage, especially when those products are there (so gross). That is a complete non issue now :). I absolutely love them and am considering buying them as gifts for other people now lol!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Since the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?

I love my reusable mugs and cups. I've found that I can sometimes get take out places to use my own cup if it's clean. If not, I can just ask for my drink without a lid or straw and dump it into my own reusable containers. If the cup is plastic, it's wasted, but at least I'm also not wasting the lids and straws. I also keep reusable straws in a bag in my car, as well as a second bag for the used/dirty straws to keep them separate. These also have fun designs, and my nieces and nephews love picking their favorites!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

It's honestly pretty satisfying to use reusable bags. They aren't as flimsy and some of mine are kind of cute! I especially like ones that don't have a plastic lining. I know at least being reusable the plastic is a BIT better than single use, but it's still nice to avoid it. I have some bags that are insulated too which is really nice, though those ones have more plastic on them. They're wonderful though for refrigerated and frozen foods to keep them cold longer, especially if I have to make any stops on my way home. It benefits me to use them and also the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Pets
How could you reduce your waste even further (i.e. by making pet treats out of kitchen scraps or about-to-go-bad produce)?

    Eden Mundell's avatar

My dog has a sensitive stomach, so he has to have plain meats as treats. It's better if they're boiled to remove extra fats. I can use leftovers and rinse them very well and then boil them. This will remove excess fat as well as remove any lingering seasonings that could harm him. I can also mix these with some well cooked leftover veggies or starches (such as rice or potatoes!). I can mix them together and bake them to make little snack bars for him! I also make some treats for my cat, but it's much more flexible for her as her stomach isn't super sensitive.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle
Often, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?

I ordered some heat-safe essential oils to add to the wool dryer balls so I don't have to miss out on the fresh scent of dryer sheets :)
