Shelley's actions
Personal Care
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.
Family
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 30 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Personal Care
Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Personal Care
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Personal Care
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 60 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Personal Care
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 6 piece(s) of litter each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Shelley Orloski 7/18/2022 7:04 AMI already recycle and compost, but I can make better choices on the front end when shopping. It is easier in the summer with all of the farmer's markets in the area. Winter is much harder to buy fresh and local produce. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Shelley Orloski 7/12/2022 1:23 PMEvery week, I pack a picnic for my daughter and I as her ballet class takes most of the day. This prevents us from purchasing fast food and creating waste. I purchase all of our snacks in bulk and portion them out in my reusable snack bags. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareHow can you advocate for the importance of reducing packaging to the rest of your friends, family and larger community?
Shelley Orloski 7/06/2022 3:29 PMI love Mad Hippie products! I am slowly replacing my cosmetics. It's a slow process since I don't use a lot of it very often 😊 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsHow does buying used differ from buying new? How does each purchasing decision make you feel?
Shelley Orloski 7/05/2022 12:42 PMWhile I did not buy items, I actually donated unused pet supplies to my local animal shelter. This helps me by finding a good use for the items and helps the shelter not have to purchase additional items. I think it is a win-win! -
Shelley Orloski 7/03/2022 5:13 AMI am excited to shout out and share 2 of my favorite nature helping organizations! A Drop in the Ocean for my personal hygiene products and Mad Hippie for my cosmetics! Both are great companies and I encourage you to check them out!
