I will spend at least 15 minutes researching how to properly dispose of bioplastics in my city and share this information with 3 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.

All Natural Pet Toys
I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Lifestyle
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Food
Advocate for Plastic-Free Dining
I will talk to the owner or manager of a restaurant I frequent to request that they reduce their use of single-use and disposable plastics.
Family
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 2 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Family
Discover Together
I will spend 10 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Food
Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.
Food
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Lifestyle
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Family
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and tupperware-like containers in my children's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Family
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Community
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 15 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 2 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Family
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!

Fill a Water Bottle

Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.

Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by posting to my social media networks.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Community
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Angelica Ortiz 7/31/2022 4:00 PMWe are polluting this planet in so many ways that it is hard to pinpoint exactly what is most concerning. But I would say air and water pollution would be at the top of my list, because without either one of those resources, we would not survive very long. I think that we all need to be aware that anything we do that harms the environment will come back to hunt us. Environmental issues are not someone else's problem. We all live on this planet and whatever happens here, will affect all of us. Therefore, we all need to take responsibility and help in one way or another preserve our home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyDoes your child play differently with natural or repurposed toys than with other toys? If so, how?
Angelica Ortiz 7/31/2022 3:42 PMAs long as it is something that she likes, she will enjoy it just the same. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsWe know you want to - tell us about why your pet is so awesome!
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?
Angelica Ortiz 7/31/2022 3:21 PMPlastic production pollutes the ground, water, and air. I am sure my community is affected, but plastic is everywhere. The bottom line is that plastic pollution affects everyone in one way or another. No one is exempt! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Angelica Ortiz 7/29/2022 2:40 PMOne of my main concerns is global warming and how it is affecting climate around the world. I am sure plastics also have something to do with it. But more directly, I am concern about all the pollutants in the air and water as a result of plastic creation, use, and disposal. I think we all have to take part as individuals to help reduce and preferably eliminate the problem. No government or organization will be successful unless we all make it our problem. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Angelica Ortiz 7/29/2022 2:12 PMI looked in the closet and other places and found items I had even forgotten about. It is time to bring them back. In a way, it is like these items are new since I was no longer aware I had them! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Angelica Ortiz 7/29/2022 2:04 PMIt was not difficult, however, still had to use plastic containers to pack some of the food. These were not single use containers, though. Additionally, I saved some money by not buying snacks and other food in convenience stores and fast-food restaurants along the way. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Angelica Ortiz 7/29/2022 1:57 PMWay too much! I identified many areas were the amount can be reduces, but primarily, cutting down on the use of plastic bags may have the most impact. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyHow can you and your little one exercise your creativity without creating more plastic waste?
Angelica Ortiz 7/28/2022 3:00 PMAs an alternative to creating more modern crafts that may involve plastics, I have been using paper mache, crepe paper, painted egg shells, and even old newspapers along with cardboard to create piñatas, flowers, and a series of figurines that have been part of my culture for hundreds of years. To my knowledge, all the coloring is water based with no plastics involved. Doing this activity with the kids in my family not only allows me to teach them to stay away from plastics but also to pass on the cultural traditions to younger generations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleHow easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?
Angelica Ortiz 7/28/2022 12:32 PMNo problem at all. I bought dish soap in bulk and have been refilling small bottles of soap I had previously purchased. I have also found out that old bottles of ketchup are great for this purpose.
