Elizabeth's actions
Community
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 180 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 4 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Community
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 120 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Lifestyle
KEEP IT UPCYCLE
Post to our Team APE feed about an item that you "upcycled" or "creatively reused" and thereby avoided consuming plastic associated with buying a new item and having that item sent to you/your area!
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Pets
DIY Cat Litter
I will swap out my cat's litter for sawdust, mulch, or dirt with baking soda.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Personal Care
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 120 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Personal Care
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Pets
All Natural Pet Toys
I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 120 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.

REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Elizabeth Parada 7/22/2022 11:33 AMI love to shop at vintage, second hand or yard sales. It's fun to find new things and feel good about reusing clothing or linens. Then the new clothes are not the same as what everyone else is wearing. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Elizabeth Parada 7/18/2022 8:14 PMUse what you have and don't but extra tupperware if you have to go plastic containers from take out. Make all your plastic last longer and then only buy what you need and try to only buy plastic that is made from post consumer product. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsWe know you want to - tell us about why your pet is so awesome!
Elizabeth Parada 7/18/2022 8:10 PMI have 2 cats, 1 dog, 2 tortoises and 1 moluccan cockatoo. I make most all of my pets toys using safe recycling items. All my pets get along and live together very well which is super fun to watch. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleAs you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?
Elizabeth Parada 7/16/2022 9:45 PMI am now looking at packaging different and trying to only buy plastic if necessary and making choices based on if it is made from recycled plastic and not new plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Elizabeth Parada 7/16/2022 9:43 PMThis was an easy one for me because I have not used plastic bags for some time. For my husband it is not as intuitive. I have reminded him to make sure he has reusable bags in his car at all times. Hes getting better. We are also using far fewer trash bags. We are composting all food and garden waste and not bagging larger items including recycling. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Elizabeth Parada 7/16/2022 9:36 PMI have noticed that more people are just not using a straw at all reusable or otherwise. I think this is a step forward because I don't always have my bag with me and do not always carry a straw so I just refuse the one that is offered. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsIn what ways is supplying your pet with all natural pet toys better for your pet, better for you, and better for the environment?
Elizabeth Parada 7/08/2022 11:42 AMI have repurposed boxes and paper for cat toys and bird toys, as well as using some garden cuttings for them to smell and play with. This seems to be very stimulating for all of them.
