DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

    Megan Pearce's avatar
    Megan Pearce 7/08/2022 2:36 PM
Many reusable containers are microwave safe and plastic wrap is not needed
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
It is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?

    Megan Pearce's avatar
    Megan Pearce 7/08/2022 2:34 PM
We have a stash of reusable plates and silverware in our building that we use and allow others to use for heating up lunches and snacks
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

    Megan Pearce's avatar
    Megan Pearce 7/08/2022 2:33 PM
I feel more connected cause I focus more on what is in my community around me while looking for trash to pick up, and having a clean environment makes me feel better
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Since the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?

I have been more inclined to make coffee at home instead of stopping on my way to work to try and make sure I am using my own reusable cups. The starbucks near me has started to accept reusable cups again, so when I do go I try to remember to bring my cup and go inside to order
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
How can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

    Megan Pearce's avatar

The zoo restaurants currently use all disposable cutlery instead of a reusable option. Many restaurants such as panera have access to reusable cutlery and it could be an option here as well for guests eating in the restaurants, with access to some disposable for grab and go areas by request.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Have you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

I have noticed a shift in the community, as the zoo and many animal institutions are already going straw free, and many places such as Dunkin Donuts and starbucks are moving away from needing straws with new lids for cold drinks. A lot of places, such as starbucks, are also using compostable straws now as an alternative to the traditional plastic ones.
