Megan's actions
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Community
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 10 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 2 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 1 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Food
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 5 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Food
Use Reusables at Work
I will use reusable dishes and silverware when eating at work.
Personal Care
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Community
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 10 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Community
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Megan Pearce 7/08/2022 2:36 PMMany reusable containers are microwave safe and plastic wrap is not needed -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodIt is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?
Megan Pearce 7/08/2022 2:34 PMWe have a stash of reusable plates and silverware in our building that we use and allow others to use for heating up lunches and snacks -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Megan Pearce 7/08/2022 2:33 PMI feel more connected cause I focus more on what is in my community around me while looking for trash to pick up, and having a clean environment makes me feel better -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodSince the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?
Megan Pearce 7/08/2022 6:30 AMI have been more inclined to make coffee at home instead of stopping on my way to work to try and make sure I am using my own reusable cups. The starbucks near me has started to accept reusable cups again, so when I do go I try to remember to bring my cup and go inside to order -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Megan Pearce 7/08/2022 6:28 AMThe zoo restaurants currently use all disposable cutlery instead of a reusable option. Many restaurants such as panera have access to reusable cutlery and it could be an option here as well for guests eating in the restaurants, with access to some disposable for grab and go areas by request. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Megan Pearce 7/08/2022 5:41 AMI have noticed a shift in the community, as the zoo and many animal institutions are already going straw free, and many places such as Dunkin Donuts and starbucks are moving away from needing straws with new lids for cold drinks. A lot of places, such as starbucks, are also using compostable straws now as an alternative to the traditional plastic ones.
