What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

After reflecting on this past month, the final third of which I spent in another country, my greatest concern has definitely evolved.
The way we are affecting the planet differs from person to person, nation to nation - no doubt. And of course, some are naturally better with change.
(Does anyone remember when the US tried to switch to the metric system for a hot second but quickly gave up?)
What I’ve experienced, however, is that Germany prioritizes sustainability over convenience, single use plastic is not very common, and people follow the extensive recycling rules. I know it wasn’t  “simple”, but I wish we could follow a similar path.
(All of these bins pictured below are for a different material)

Community Tour A Waste Management Facility
Landfills and recycling centers tell us a lot about our communities and purchasing habits. What did you glean from your tour?

I’m probably one of the first tourists that has ever asked to tour a waste management site in Germany 🤣 next time I’m in Europe I’ll plan this out in advance so I can better explain my intentions. I’m sure they thought I was such a goon, but it was a fun experience. I am blown away that there are so many bins and everyone respects them!!
And for the public areas that only have one bin, everything is carefully placed in there, and trash is sorted upon pickup. No plastic bags in the bins BECAUSE THEY DONT USE PLASTIC BAGS! 🥹

I truly love it here!! 🇩🇪😍🖤❤️💛

After learning more about chocolate packaging, I was delighted to stumble across this machine! Saving the climate is celebrated EVERYWHERE in Germany! So grateful I could make my visit to the chocolate museum carbon neutral! (and the chocolate 🍫 was wrapped in foil!! 🥹🙏🏽)

I used my reusable cup at Starbucks today on the way to Freiburg and I thought I’d get one of my go to faves - a pink drink with no strawberries. First of all, it had a much cooler name “Pink Starbucks Coconut Refresha” and it can’t be different in Germany, right?🫢 Wrong!! 😆

They also do a 30 cent discount when you bring in your reusable cup! Love that!!

Love everything about this! 30 cent discount and a sweet name?! Refresha… that’s so cool!

In what ways does your pet make your life happier, more interesting, or more rewarding?

I haven’t seen my furry friends in over a week because I’ve been in Germany! I miss them! 🥲 Here are Tabacho (cat) and Affogato (dog)! These two and Leo (cat, not pictured) bring me so much joy. Each one knows their name and will come on command. Bacho and Affo will  sit on command. Affo can also shake, spin to the left, spin to the right, high five, lay down, roll over, and give kisses! She is such a smart dog and I’ve never had such reciprocal, unconditional love with another animal. 😍

In what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?

I personally don’t have social media except for LinkedIn, and while I don’t use it for the same purpose as the youngsters of today (wow I sound old), the companies and people I follow represent my values to a tee. It’s a great way to reach a large amount of people!

This message can have many interpretations. When thinking about the plastic problem, it is especially relevant.
This month has been invaluable in creating a profound impact on my understanding of sustainability and how I can make the biggest impact. I’m astonished at how much I’ve learned the past three and a half weeks!
