Denise's actions
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Community
Raise Money For a Nonprofit
I will raise money to support a nonprofit dedicated to plastic pollution reduction.
Lifestyle
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 15 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Personal Care
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 15 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Personal Care
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Personal Care
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Food
Plant a Garden
I will plant a herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Food
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Family
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 15 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Pets
All Natural Pet Toys
I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Lifestyle
Homemade Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products at home.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Food
Use Reusables at Work
I will use reusable dishes and silverware when eating at work.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Denise Rene 7/05/2022 2:16 PMi rarely buy clothing. when i do, i generally buy from consignment or thrift shops, since items are nice and the action is planet-positive. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsHow are caring for your pet and caring for the environment connected for you?
Denise Rene 7/05/2022 2:13 PMwe have a pooper-scooper and large 5 gallon bucket (2 large dogs). we do "poop-patrol" in the yard weekly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Denise Rene 7/05/2022 2:12 PMplanted tomatoes, peas, cucumber, zucchini, bell pepper, oregano, basil, flowers - a mix of starts and seeds -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Denise Rene 7/05/2022 2:09 PMwe have two kitchen cabinets full of reusable plastic and glass containers, organized with their lids, so they're close to the fridge, organized and easy to use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Denise Rene 7/05/2022 2:08 PMit's been easy to skip plastics grocery bags, since i bring my large set of reusable bags with me to the stores. the reusable bags all fit in a large reusable bag that was made of recycled plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodDo an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?
Denise Rene 7/05/2022 2:06 PMwe try to cook most things from scratch, and buy fresh veg, fruit, etc. meat (chicken, etc.) we buy large packages (a bit less plastic). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareEven though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?
Denise Rene 7/05/2022 2:04 PMhave used these in the past, and have not since we're on septic now. did not know they caused grief for commercial systems. will let others know to avoid these too. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodUsing the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?
Denise Rene 7/05/2022 2:02 PMwe reuse the Pure Tea square bottomed bottles, wash in dishwasher, refill them with water, and put in fridge. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Denise Rene 7/05/2022 2:00 PMwe look for 1 or 2 plastics, and avoid others (5, 7, etc.) since our area only recycles 1 and 2 plastics
