Over the weekend, I was in Sedge Island (off Barnegat Bay, NJ) to  harvest clams with friends. After the fact, I did some research on bivalves, their ecological services, and their impacts on climate change. According to zoologist David Willer, "we are looking at 340 tonnes of greenhouse gases produced per tonne of edible beef, compared with just 11 tonnes of emissions per tonne of bivalve protein." As I cooked clams for dinner, I was reminded to challenge myself further to vary my diet to include food with quality nutrients AND lower environmental footprint.

Not an easy challenge being away from home and staying in Florida for a few days, but I opted out of straws, had several cooked meals with family, and finished leftovers so nothing went to waste. I will acknowledge that to-go containers were compostable, but since composting was not a viable option in Florida where I was, I tossed them in regular trash. For subsequent travels, I will bring reusable containers and snacks in reusable containers.

Fast fashion is something I haven't thought about in a while, but after having watched several videos online, I was reminded of Patagonia's "fix, not replace" principle...and the Rent the Runway company that empowers consumers to rent instead of purchase. Less is more.
