REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Eli Rosewater 7/27/2022 4:43 AMThere are a number of ways to wear even just one top. Different accessories or different layering techniques can create entirely different looks. I've seen some folks on Instagram and YouTube doing some amazing expression of self with their own Capsule Closets (minimal amount of pieces), and I think that's really neat. I'm not quite at that minimalization yet, however, I am focused on ensuring that my consumption of clothing is eco-friendly, and minimizes my reliance on fast fashion. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityIn what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?
Eli Rosewater 7/27/2022 4:39 AMThere have actually been studies that suggest that millennials (my generation) are far more likely to make purchases based on those around them than not. A friend or family member saying "hey, I recommend this thing" is a huge factor in the actions of others. So sometimes it's nice to use that persuasion of social media for good, and hype some folks up who are doing a fantastic job in taking steps to reduce their own effect on the environment. -
Eli Rosewater 7/27/2022 1:54 AMSo, I like to pretend I'm an artist, and I work with Acrylic Paint. Something that I have learned this year while getting back into painting is that Acrylic Paint is *dun dun dun* plastic. I spent a bit of time researching acrylic paint, and the dangers of improper disposal of the wastewater from cleaning brushes. When just dumped down your kitchen sink, the paint in the water not only rehardens in your pipes, and can create a fairly large clog, but also gets into the water system. However, all is not lost, you don't have to throw away your acrylic paint just yet. There are actually a few different methods for proper wastewater disposal that removes the paint from the water and makes it safe. The easiest is leaving it out to evaporate - the water goes off into the air, and the paint gets left behind in a solid form (which some folks have said is recyclable, but I would double check your local waste facilities). But if you don't have the time or patience for nature to take its course (or you have too much water to just wait for evaporation) there are other various methods that will actually clean out the water by reclumping all of the paint, and then it's just a matter of filtration (it's definitely a thing to google to find some proper instructions on if it's something you struggle with)... and still a little drying and evaporation (again, to get that solid form, which may be recyclable in your area).
Hobbies are brilliant and vital for our mental health, and they can be that much greater when you take the steps to make them safe for our environment as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareDo some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?
Eli Rosewater 7/20/2022 3:47 PMI've actually been deodorant free for a long while now... it stopped becoming an every day practice in quarantine and then eventually you lose the thing and it just smells weird when you do wear it once in a blue moon. I have noticed that a lot of my rashy dry underarm problems are no more, and I no longer have to worry about potential staining in my lighter colored t-shirts.
I did have some left over anti-perspirant/deodorants, for the occasional days when I needed a little extra protection, but I've recently come across powders that don't block the body from doing what it needs to, but does help the skin stay drier and gives a nice little fragrance to feel fresh even while sweating in the summer heat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareWhat are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?
Eli Rosewater 7/20/2022 3:35 PMAt the moment, after having just bought two new shampoo bars and a bar of soap from Lush, I can say economically it's a bit more expensive than my usual Old Spice Body Wash and various shampoos. However, if the internet is correct, they should last longer than my old products. I think also, being in bar form, I'll likely naturally use less of the product, which will help fight against buildup and be that one extra step to making the product go further. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Eli Rosewater 7/03/2022 1:40 PMA local coffee shop I often order from has switched to paper straws, and Tropical Smoothie has offered edible straws. I'm glad that some of the companies and places I frequent are taking the steps too, which makes my job that much easier.-
Mary Renaker 7/03/2022 4:59 PMLove the creativity of edible straws! We need vision, artists and lots of creativity to get us through this.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Eli Rosewater 7/01/2022 7:47 AMI guess what concerns me the most is that I can't actually do anything... like in the discussion we talked about how it's a lot of big corporations that are the ones making such a mess of the world... and it feels like me cutting straws out of my life isn't really going to do anything. But, it's good to remember that even me just doing what I can can help - even if only ever so slightly....
I am concerned that we've really hit the point where the planet can't sustain us anymore... and it's rough to think about how future generations are going to lose out on some things my generation loved as children because of the looming environmental problems.
