Lindsey's actions
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Food
Use Reusables at Work
I will use reusable dishes and silverware when eating at work.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Personal Care
A Sustainable Flow
I will make the switch to sustainable, reusable period products.
Personal Care
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 20 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Food
Reuse Old Plastic Bags
I have a cabinet under my sink full of plastic bags I collected before I moved back to the city under the plastic bag ban. My goal is to continue finding creative ways to reuse them instead of letting them take up space under my sink.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodDo an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?
Lindsey Rowell 7/26/2022 8:55 AMThis one was HARD. I'm already not the world's best chef, so I was limited to what I could make. The easiest thing for me was a carbonara. I already had a box of noodles, so I went to the farmers market at 32nd street and got fresh local peas in the pod. I also found Liberty Delight Farms there, which had the slab bacon I needed. They let me put it in my tupperware container, so that was helpful! I would love to challenge myself to more complex plastic-free meals in the future now that I know that I can bring my tupperware containers to the farmers market! Cost a little more than I'd usually spend, but the fresh ingredients really made a difference. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Lindsey Rowell 7/19/2022 1:01 PMAs someone who expresses themselves through my fashion choices and loves variety (and someone who just moved and needs to get rid of old things), I have been essentially just switching out my used clothing for more used clothing. I've been hanging out at thrift stores and consignment shops often looking for furniture for my new place, so as I go, it's been easy for me to pack up things I'm not wearing anymore. And as the weather changes or I'm looking for new outfits for events, I check out the clothing selection. I've even taken a few pieces I got from my favorite consignment shop back to either the same place or a different thrift store. One clothing item...many lives! I've also been into maximalist style lately, so many of the clothes I don't wear often but couldn't stomach giving away are getting a second, third, fourth and fifth life as layering pieces. Sustainable fashion Tik Tok has taught me a lot this month!-

Lindsey Rowell 7/19/2022 12:54 PMWent down a rabbit hole on Tik Tok about how fast fashion brands create a ridiculous amount of wastewater in the production of just one cotton clothing item. And if that wasn't bad enough, learning about the microplastics in non-cotton clothing was alarming. -
Lindsey Rowell 7/19/2022 12:14 PMLeft my pool bag at a friend's house last week, so I threw my towel and extra clothes for the pool in a big Target bag instead of tossing it. The plastic bag also fits perfectly down in my pool bag as a liner to keep the inside of the bag dry. -
Lindsey Rowell 7/19/2022 12:09 PMWhat do you do when it's time to deep condition and you can't find a shower cap? You slap a plastic bag on your head. And when you're done? Rinse and hang out to dry for your next deep condition! -
Lindsey Rowell 7/19/2022 12:06 PMLeft my reusable bags in the house while grocery shopping, but I was able to find enough old plastic bags in my car to use as my reusable bag for the day. Threw them right back under my sink for their next adventure! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Lindsey Rowell 7/19/2022 10:44 AMKeeping my metal straw and brush cleaner with a little container of dish detergent in my bag was a good idea :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodIt is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?
Lindsey Rowell 7/19/2022 10:42 AMThis was easy for me...handhelds and finger foods are the way to go for lunch in the office! -
